  3. Title • What is the title? • What do I think this reading will be about? • Do I already know something about this topic? • Does the title express a point of view?

  4. Heading • What does this heading tell me I will read about? • What is the topic of the paragraph beneath it? • How can I turn this heading into a question that will be answered in the text?

  5. INTRODUCTION • Is there an opening paragraph? Is it in bold or italicized? • Does it introduce the reading passage, story, or textbook chapter? • What does it tell me I will be reading about?

  6. Every First Sentence In a Paragraph • What do I think this reading is going to be about based on the first sentence in each paragraph?

  7. Visuals and Vocabulary • Are there pictures? Graphs? Charts? • What do the captions say? • Is there a list of key vocabulary words? • Are there important words in bold type?

  8. End of Reading Questions • What do the questions ask? • Let me keep these questions in mind as I read, so that I can annotate my text.

  9. Summary • Is there a summary of the reading that I can view? • What do I know already about this reading?
