WELCOME 2022 PARENTS AND STUDENTS • Purpose • Begin the exciting transition from middle school to our new high school • Develop a clear understanding of high school graduation requirements • Learn about the registration process • Create the foundation for a respectful and trusting relationship among students, staff, and parents

  3. COLLEGE / CAREER READY • AHS GOAL • All students will graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge to enter post-high school opportunities • 4 year college • Community college • Technical college • Apprenticeship • Military • Workforce with living wages

WORDS FROM YOUR ADMINISTRATORS • Be involved in your student’s academic program • Encourage your student to get involved in activities - but don’t overextend • Know your student’s friends • Utilize Family Access & other technology • Have your student attend 9th Grade LINK Orientation in August

MOREFROM YOUR ADMINISTRATORS • Monitor use of technology you and your student • Lots of changes – don’t let students get lost in the shuffle • Remember that all teenagers need supervision • Get to know your student’s counselor and teachers • Get involved in AHS yourself • Create an environment that encourages academic achievement and high expectations

  10. WASHINGTON STATE AND AHS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • AHS Credit Requirements • 26.0 credits required • Personalized Pathway Options • More information to follow at later date • State Assessments • Culminating Presentation - Senior Year • High School and Beyond Plan and Portfolio

  11. STATE ASSESSMENTS Must pass • English Language Arts (ELA) – 10th Grade • Mathematics – 10th Grade • WA Comp Assessment of Science - TBA

ENGLISHPAGES 15-16 • Four credits are required for graduation • Grade 9 Options • 9th Grade English • 9th Grade Honors English • Recommended by Bloc Teacher • Very strong writing, reading comprehension, and organizational skills are needed • Summer reading and writing assignments are required for all English classes and grade levels!

MATHPAGES 17-18 • Three credits are required for graduation • Four credits required for 4 yr. colleges/universities • 9th grade math placement • Must follow teacher recommendation • Strong link between math success and overall graduation success • Math teacher may recommend student to retake a class (ex: Alg. I) This is beneficial!

SCIENCEPAGES 19-20 • Three credits are required for graduation • Most four year colleges require Chemistry or Physics • Physical Science – 9th Grade year • Current Advanced Science 8 Students may be recommended for Biology • Good lab and math skills are necessary • Teacher recommendation required • Strong work ethic and organizational skills

SOCIAL STUDIESPAGES 21-22 • Three credits are required • Most 9th Graders will take World History • World History is a .5 credit class (one semester) • AP Human Geography option • Highly challenging, college level class • 1.0 credit (full year) course • Teacher recommendation and AP contract required • Fulfills World History requirement

WORLD LANGUAGE PAGE 23 • Two credits are required for students planning to apply to four year colleges • Spanish is available for 9th graders • Strong academic history • Strong organizational skills and work ethic • Many students opt to begin in 10th or 11th grade • Current eighth grade students • Spanish II with teacher recommendation • Retaking Spanish I is also a very good option

  17. FINE ARTS PAGES 24-26 • 1-2 credits will be required • Based on student’s Personalized Pathway - more info. to follow • AHS offers many Fine Arts opportunities • Performing Arts • Visual Arts

  18. PHYSICAL EDUCATION PAGE 27 • 1.5 Credits are required (3 semesters) • Students may take more than 1.5 Credits • P.E. Course Offerings • Sports and Conditioning • Strength and Endurance Training

  19. CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION –CTEPAGES 28-31 • 1.0 credit minimum is required for graduation (2 semesters) • Students typically take additional CTE classes as electives • CTE courses prepare students for advanced training and opportunities after high school

  20. HEALTH PAGE 30 • All 9th Graders will enroll in Health for one semester • (0.5 credit) • This is a state requirement for graduation

  21. ELECTIVES AND ALTERNATES • Scheduling begins with the 12th grade • Electives requested by 9th Graders are often full • Alternate choices are important • The good news. . . . • All electives will count toward graduation • Students continually adjust and adapt very well!

  23. REGISTRATION PROCESS • Students will meet with AHS counselors on March 22 and 23 • All registration forms must be signed by parent or guardian • Registration forms must be returned no later than Tuesday, March 27 to Science teacher
