  1. January 9, 2019 Bell Ringer Find each unit price. 24 ounces of shampoo for $3.29 12 ounces of lotion for $4.89 8 ounces of nail polish remover for $1.29 10 ounces of shaving cream for $1.99

  2. Personal Care • When you think about your appearance, you probably think about clothes first. Other things you need to think about include your hair, teeth, nails, and skin. • Shampoo, soap, and dental floss help keep you clean, well groomed, and healthy. You should make a specific budget for personal care.

  3. Sorting It Out • Ivy bought a birthday card for $2.99, a three pack of soap for $4.15, and candle for $6.07, deodorant for $3.75, and shampoo for $3.70. Sales tax is 5%. How much did she spend on personal care items with tax?

  4. Discount Shopping • How do you know if an item on sale is really a good deal? When you see a price that is lower than usual, find out how the item compares with items that are not on sale. Ask yourself these questions: • What is the size? The item might cost less because it is smaller. • What is the quantity? The item might cost less because there are fewer in the package. • What is the quality? The item might cost less because the product is not well made and will not last very long.

  5. In Practice • Talia buys a package of three pizzas on sale for $8.97. The pizza is a brand she knows and a good quality. Her friend buys one pizza of the same brand for $3.79 in a different store. Who got the better buy? Explain.

  6. How could this change? • Talia got the better buy because she paid the lower unit price. However, if Talia only wanted one pizza for some reason, maybe her friend’s deal would have made more sense. • What if Talia’s pizza would have been a different (inferior) brand? What if the pizza was smaller or if the ingredients were cheaper? These are all things to consider before celebrating finding the best buy.

  7. Assignment • Word document titled “The Wonderful Sale”
