  2. Aim of the lesson This lesson looks at some of the language and strategies for summarizing texts.

  3. What do we already know? • What do you know about • summarizing? What words come to mind? 2. How do you summarize?

  4. Summarize • to present the substance • or general idea in brief form; • to create a concise, condensed • account of the original; • to cover the main points.

  5. Summarizing: Shortening material by retaining and re-stating main ideas and leaving out details.

  7. Tips for summarizing • Read the text . • Identify key words. • Identify or write the topic sentence: what the text or passage is about. - Cross out unimportant information, ideas not connected with the topic or ideas that are repeated.

  8. Tips for summarizing • - Identify main Idea: the What . It is always written as a fact. It is never a question. • State the conclusion of the article. • Summarize rather than give a table of contents. • Keep summary short: 3 -7 sentences. • -

  9. Tips for summarizing - Supporting Details-The supporting details are the rest of the most relevant facts left in a passage or article. They should answer the rest of the 'W' questions.

  12. Steps to identify the topic Look at the title.Look at the first and last paragraph.Ask yourself: “What is discussed through the whole section?”

  13. Steps to identify the topic Look at captions, pictures, words in bold, and headings for clues to the topic. What do they all have in common?

  15. Wrong:  This article covers the topic of measuring the extent of global deforestation. The article discusses reasons for concern, the technique, the results, and the project’s current goal.

  16. Right:According to the author of “Seeing the Forest,” the extent of global deforestation was difficult to measure until satellite remote sensing techniques were applied. Measuring the extent of global deforestation is important because of concerns about global warming and species extinctions. The technique compares old infrared LANDSAT images with new images. The authors conclude the method is accurate and cost effective.
