  1. Setting up a new GA branch in your area Nicole Lyons

  2. Is there an existing branch in your area? (we have 40!) What is the purpose of a GA branch? Who would organise the branch? Introduction

  3. The Nottinghamshire Branch • 1 year old • Around 50 members from 30-40 schools • Linked with the Minster School’s specialist Humanities status • Meets once each half term • Mainly secondary school teachers

  4. How to get started • Contact all secondary schools in your area (this is not necessarily your county) • Contact other interest groups – universities, local authorities, local businesses, teacher training courses • Details for database – key stages, exam boards, contact details • What do people want? • Create a list of priorities

  5. Things to consider • How often to meet? • For professionals, or for students as well? • Membership fee? • Location? • Suitable time and date? • What can you learn from other branches?

  6. Activities • Guest speakers – topical, education, fieldwork • Lots of expertise within the branch – PGCE, NQT, AST • Powers of persuasion • Fieldwork excursions • Product demonstrations • Sharing of resources • Sharing of best practice • Worldwise quiz

  7. 3 levels – on-line, local and national quiz • Very well-resourced • Invent new rounds • Local quiz – representatives from each school • Local business sponsors, prizes, food • Invite parents, teachers • Let the rest of your school know!

  8. Has it been worth it? • Yes! • Working links formed between schools • Informal dialogue generated • Sharing of resources • Making good use of GA resources • Membership numbers are increasing • Worldwise 2007 is booked and we expect more members

  9. The future • Keep in touch with the GA • Continually re-evaluate the branch: - new activities? - new members? - new issues to consider?
