  1. Jaime’s mishap with the busPart 1: The crash After school on a beautiful cold day in February, Jaime races to the student parking lot in order to be ahead of the rush of students leaving. She got in her car, starts it up, turned up the volume on the dash to hear her favorite song. She then starts to move out of her parking spot, planning to turn right into the exit lane. At that moment, a school bus in the exit lane accelerates towards Jaime’s emerging car. Jaime, realizing her dilemma, steps on the accelerator in hopes of entering the lane before the bus reaches her position. No such luck.

  2. The crash-continued Jaime heard brakes screeching behind her and then felt the bus crash into the rear of her car. The impact of the bus shoved her car 6-7yards forward before it came to a stop. Jaime hadn’t noticed that the bus was full of students. It was a miracle that Jaime seemed to have escaped serious injury, as did the bus driver and the students on the bus.

  3. Questions to complete based on the reading • Have you or someone you know well, been in a non-fatal accident? If so, describe the location, situation (what happened, # of vehicles/objects involved) and any injuries that resulted from the accident

  4. Questions 2) Draw a position-time curve of the motion of Jaime’s car from the time it was parked to the moment it came to rest after the collision. 3) How would you represent the motion (in a P-T graph or a V-T graph) of the BUS from the time the driver slammed on his brakes until the bus came to a stop.
