  1. Classifying Matter

  2. What is matter? • Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space.

  3. Matter • It is broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures.

  4. Pure Substance: Composition and properties never change from one sample to the next • Ex: Table salt, Oxygen, pure water

  5. Mixtures: Composition and propertiescanchange from one sample to the next • Ex: Salsa, lemonade, milk

  6. Element: pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler form by ordinary means • Contain only 1 type of atom • Atom: smallest particle of an element that keeps the properties of the element

  7. Examples of Elements Gold Sodium Chlorine Precious Metal Reactive metal Green Gas

  8. Compound: Pure substance made of two or more elements joined in definite proportions • Made of 2 or more types of atoms • Ex: Water (H2O),

  9. Compounds Properties of compounds differ from the elements that make them up: O H2 Hydrogen + O2 Oxygen H H H2O (Gas) (Gas) Water (liquid)

  10. Types of mixtures • Heterogeneous mixture: Parts are unevenly mixed • Chocolate chip cookie • Homogeneous mixture (solutions): Parts are evenly mixed throughout • Salt water, sugar water

  11. Matter Tree Matter has mass and occupies space Pure Substance Composition always same Mixture Composition Can change Element Made 1 kind of atom Compound Made Two or more kinds Of atoms Homogeneous Evenly Mixed Heterogeneous Unevenly Mixed
