2. CPEC Study • Master Plan recommends that UC accept students from top 12.5%. • Last year, California Postsecondary Education Commission showed we were admitting students from top 14.4% of California high schools. • Therefore, eligibility criteria had to be tightened.

3. Paths to Eligibility • Statewide Eligibility, based on GPA in“a-g” courses and test scores. • Eligibility in the Local Context, top 4% based on GPA in local high school. • Eligibility by Examination alone. • Ineligible students may be admitted “by exception,” e.g. based on special talents.

5. Process for Eligibility Changes • Begins with Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (systemwide Academic Senate). • BOARS recommends to systemwide Academic Senate, which recommends to Regents, who have ultimate authority to approve.

6. Changes to Eligibility • Rule Changes (effective immediately): • Change in average GPA calculation • Enforcement of ELC requirements • Eligibility Index Change (effective 2007): • Raising minimum GPA from 2.8 to 3.0 • The 3.0 GPA was President Dynes suggested modification of BOARS’ original recommendation.

8. Reduction of Pool • Rule changes reduce pool to top 13%. • Increase in GPA reduces pool to top 12.8%. • Don’t reduce further for now.

9. Effect on UCLA Admissions • Most of our admits are not near bottom of eligibility pool. • Based on last year’s admissions, there would be essentially NO effect. • Only 46 out of 9,949 admitted freshmen had GPA < 3.0. • These students had special talents (athletic, musical, artistic, etc.) and could still be admitted “by exception.”
