  1. QUESTOR Meeting. Kedco – Bioenergy Developers. 12/05/2010 AD plant feeder Biogas Capture CHP Unit

  2. Kedco – Bioenergy Developers. • Kedco plc develop platforms that convert biomass and waste to green energy using leading edge bio scientific technologies. • Kedco plc is the technology provider. • Technology partner companies: • agriKomp • Wet anaerobic digestion. • BEKON • Dry fermentation. • CPC • Small scale gasification <100kW. • ZeroPoint • Large scale gasification >2MW

  3. Kedco – Biogas Developers • Kedco have planning permission for a 1MWel biogas plant at Banbridge, Co. Down. • agriKomp proven German technology provider – involved in over 1000 projects. • Feedstock – grass silage, maize silage and cattle slurry. • Planning permission in 9 months: extension of existing farm practice. • THE CHALLENGE: • Energy distribution costs! • THE SOLUTION: • Micro gas network.

  4. Micro gas network - A case study, Isny, Germany.

  5. Biogas from grass.Market opportunity driven research. • 790,000ha of grassland in NI. Biggest biomass resource available. • 1ha of grass will produce enough renewable electricity for 3 homes for a year. • Consistent feedstock leads to a consistent biogas yield. • Biogas can be used as a biofuel. • Biorefineries. • Grasslands can store up to 260 tonnes of carbon per ha (FAO 2007). • Promotes biodiversity. • Provides additional income in rural regions.

  6. Our Partnership vision. Biogas from grass is an opportunity to create cohesion in our economy by bringing together the energy, agricultural, construction/engineering, research, education and tourism sectors. If only 5% of NI`s grasslands was used for biogas, NI could benefit from: • Renewable electricity for 120,000 homes; • 400 GWh of renewable heat; • £30m per year to farmers for providing the feedstock; • £80m to the construction industry; • A new local market for the engineering sector worth £80m; • Up to 1,000 new jobs in the operational phase alone; • Infrastructure development; • Integration with wind, wave and waste renewables to achieve energy independence; • Export potential: But the challenge is how does our SME based economy realise this potential? Industry lead partnerships with academia and government.

  7. Isny, Germany An industry lead partnership Thank you for your attention
