  3. The history of the XXVII World Summer Universiade 2013 starts well before its due date. Kazan was announced as the host city for the 2013 Summer Universiadein Brussels on May 31, 2008. 20 out of 27 members of the FISU Executive Committee gave their votes to the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The 27th World University Summer Games in Kazan is certain to be the first Universiade, and even more, the first high-profile multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia.

  4. The Mission of 27th World Summer Universiade • The Mission of Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade is to gather young athletes from all over the world in the city of unique multicultural heritage. Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade also aims to continue Russia’s traditions sport traditions, to serve as a starting point for future generations of athletes. Another target the Universiade pursues is to make Kazan citizens life more diverse, exciting and comfortable, to provide Kazan citizens of all ages with a possibility to do the appealing kind of sport and to have a healthy lifestyle. Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade is to contribute to the creation of Russia’s positive image in the world.

  6. The Symbols of 27th World Universiade

  7. Uni, the cub of winged snow leopard, is recognized as Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade mascot. The winged snow leopard is the national symbol of Tatarstan Republic. Stylized snow leopard is represented on Tatarstan coat of arms.

  8. The Universiade emblem represents a black letter ‘U’ on a white background and 5 colored stars symbolizing five continents. The emblem is also displayed on the white flag of the World University Games.

  9. The heart of 2013 Summer Universiade Emblem is the image of a tulip, a common element of Tatar ornaments, symbolizing revival. Flowers are also known to be an essential part of summer, a symbol of youth and development, joy and happiness.

  10. The Motto of the World University Games • The phrase ‘U are the world’ has been chosen as the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade Motto. It can be interpreted as: ‘You are the world’ and ‘Universiade is the World’.

  12. 27th Summer Universiade is the global student and youth sports event of 2013 in Kazan (Russia), the most northern city of all Summer Universiade Capitals, hosts this Universiade. More than 300 sets of medals are to be distributed at the Universiade.

  13. Competitions and training sessions will take place in 64 sports venues, 30 of which are specially constructed for the 2013 Games. As of June 2012, 27 venues have already been constructed and put into operation. The list of non-competition venues includes the Universiade Village (a place for the athletes and officials to stay during the 2013 Summer Universiade), Main International Centre and Universiade Opening/Closing Ceremonies Stadium.

The Universiade Village • The Universiade Village is a residential neighbourhood which was constructed in Kazan to house competitors and officials during the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade. • The athletes’ village will be home to 12,000 athletes next summer. Prior to and after the Games the complex will serve as the largest and most modern student campus for Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University and Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism. • The Universiade Village is located in the Privolzhsky City District of Kazan, it runs alongside ProspektPobedy (Victory Avenue) or Southern Intracity Highway of the Big Kazan Ring and Parin Street from Mavlyutov Street to OrenburgskyTrakt (Orenburgsky Highway). It represents a large rectangular area which stretches from northwest to southeast.

  27. К А Z А N 2 0 1 3 The online application to become a Kazan 2013 volunteer was officially opened on September 20, 2011, on the day of the Volunteers' Academy International Youth Volunteer Camp opening.

  28. The Cultural Universiade • For the first time ever in the history of World University Games the capital of Tatarstan implements the project of the Cultural Universiade. It represents a whole range of festivals in various performing arts: drama, cinematography, classical and modern music, ballet, art. The Cultural Universiade comprises annual long-term programmes as well, youth talent shows that are launched to select potential participants of the Opening/Closing Ceremonies of the Universiade and traditional national and municipal festivals. • The Cultural Universiade also focuses on creating an atmosphere of celebration for Kazan citizens and guests of Tatarstan’s capital, maximally involving them in the preparations and delivery of the 2013 Summer Universiade. • Equally important is to present Tatarstan’s and Russia’s original culture, historical and cultural heritage to guests of Kazan. Russia’s centuries-old art and cultural masterpieces, introduced to participants and visitors of the 27th World University Summer Games within the Cultural Universaide, will enable them to embrace the atmosphere of cordiality and hospitality and will contribute to international cultural cooperation. • A considerable attention is devoted to events that bring together young performers from regions of the Russian Federation, and foreign countries as well. The Cultural Universiade’s role is huge, as it helps to reveal a great number of talented youth, able to take their worthy place among creative minds of both Tatarstan and Russia.
