  1. God’s Plan For You Genesis 45:4-8

  2. God’s Plan For You • Last week we spoke on our theme of “I Surrender All” • More specifically we considered surrendering our will to God • Some have questioned what God’s will is for their life • This question points to a specific plan that God may have for someone

  3. God’s Plan For You • The beliefs on this are very wide ranging • Some believe that God has everything mapped out for your life and you really have no control or say in the matter • Others believe that we make every decision and that God has no say or plan at all for any individuals life

  4. God’s Plan For You • The answer really lies somewhere in between the two extremes • We noted two things last week: • 1. God has given us free will • 2. God does have a will and wants us to follow that will • So what is God’s plan or will for us?

  5. God’s Plan For You • 1. God does not control us, removing freewill • Some believe that God controls our decisions in this life • For example, Calvinists believe in what is called irresistible grace • This claims that God chooses you and that you have no say in it whatsoever

  6. God’s Plan For You • 1. God does not control us, removing free will • Choice has always been a part of God’s plan • God gave Adam & Eve choice in the Garden of Eden • One of the most quoted verses of the Old Testament surrounded choice (Josh. 24:15) • “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve”

  7. God’s Plan For You • 1. God does not control us, removing free will • If God controlled us, then why would a loving God not control everyone to choose salvation? • Even John 3:16 implies a choice • “Do you also want to go away?” (Jn. 6:67) • “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil. 2:12)

  8. God’s Plan For You • 1. God does not control us, removing free will • God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34; Rom. 2:11) • Even Christ exercised free will (Matt. 26:53; Jn. 10:17-18) • Salvation can be rejected (Matt. 23:37; Jn. 5:39-40)

  9. God’s Plan For You • 2. God has a will to follow, but it’s by choice • God does have a will for us • Again, the Bible speaks clearly about the will of God • Matthew 7:21 • “…but he who does the will of God abides forever” (I Jn. 2:17)

  10. God’s Plan For You • 2. God has a will to follow, but it’s by choice • We also understand that it is by choice that we follow the will of God • So what is the will of God for me, and how can I know it? • Kirk Cameron once had a great point on telling people that God has a plan for their life…

  11. God’s Plan For You • 2. God has a will to follow, but it’s by choice • To say that God has every detail of your life mapped out is not Biblical • That does not mean that God does not have a will for each and every one of us • God’s ultimate will is for the salvation of all(I Tim. 2:4; II Pet. 3:9)

  12. God’s Plan For You • 2. God has a will to follow, but it’s by choice • God has set forth things for us in His will, but given us liberty in other areas • Ex. Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15-16) • God’s will gives us direction in our lives that we might not otherwise have (Prov. 3:5-7; 16:9)

  13. God’s Plan For You • 2. God has a will to follow, but it’s by choice • God can and does work providentially in the world, even today (Prov. 19:21; Acts 5:39) • How exactly He does that, we do not know (intended) • God’s hand was usually not recognized until after the fact

  14. God’s Plan For You • 3. What’s our role in God’s plan? • Obviously we do not know now what God’s will or plan is except what He has revealed to us in His word • So how can I know if what I am doing is God’s bidding? • Man’s role in God’s plan has always been the same…

  15. God’s Plan For You • 3. What’s our role in God’s plan? • Obedience is the key to following God’s plan • Joseph sets forth a great example of this • Did Joseph know all along that it was God’s will that he be sold into slavery? • Did Joseph think that God wanted him in Potiphar’s house or even in prison?

  16. God’s Plan For You • 3. What’s our role in God’s plan? • Joseph did not realize until Genesis 45 that it was God’splan (v. 5-8) • However, what role did Joseph play in God’s plan? • He was obedient to God’s will in every place, situation, and circumstance that he found himself in

  17. God’s Plan For You • 3. What’s our role in God’s plan? • Wherever you go, whoever you are with, whatever situation you find yourself in…be who God wants you to be • If you don’t, then you might be guilty of spoiling God’s will for your life • What God does behind the scenes is for God to know and do

  18. God’s Plan For You • 3. What’s our role in God’s plan? • Mordecai spoke correctly in Esther 4:14… • “Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” • Make the most of the situations that you find yourself in to do God’s will! • Are you a hindrance or a help to God’s plan?
