  2. British sports • Many international sports were introduced by the British who take their leisure time very seriously. There is widespread participation in sport in Britain. • The United Kingdom has given birth to a range of major international sports including: football, cricket, golf, tennis, badminton, boxing, and snooker .

  4. football • Football is the most popular sport in the world. It is estimated that around 250 million people regularly play whilst many millions more watch the game on television. • Football (or "soccer" as it is colloquially called), the most popular sport in England as well as in Europe, has its traditional home in England where it was developed in the 19th century. • In the UK teams such as Manchester United and Chelsea compete in the Premier League. The Premier League, also called the Premiership, is the division where the twenty best English teams play. Premiership players can earn millions of pounds every year, not only from their wages but also from sponsorship by companies like Nike and Adidas.

  5. The FA and the FA Cup • “FA” refers to the Football Association. the FA Cup is the trophy title for a series of games played by major member teams of the Football Association. Over 20 million tickets are sold to FA games each season.

  6. Although tennis has been played for centuries, the modern game originated in England in late 19th. The main tournament is the annual Wimbledon fortnight, one of the 4 tennis "Grand Slam" tournaments. tennis

  7. golf • The home of golf is Scotland where the game has been played since the 17th century and naturally the oldest golf club in the world is there: The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The most important national event is the Open Championship with the Walker Cup for amateurs and the Ryder Cup for professionals.

  8. Cricket • Cricket, the most typically English of sports, has been in existence since the 16th century. On an international level, 5-day Cornhill Test Matches.

  9. Horse Racing • The true sport of British kings is not skiing or golfing, but horse racing. There are two kinds of horse racing: flat racing and steeplechase. • in recent years the Grand National has become increasingly controversial because of the dangers involved. • Every year some horses (and riders too) can be injured in trying to negotiate a jump for example. Badly hurt horses are usually shot, and animal lovers find it unacceptable that animals should be hurt and killed just for our enjoyment.

  11. The Royal Ascot • It is the biggest social event associated with horse racing. People dress up and go to show off their fashionable clothes as well to watch the races and place their bets. Women especially wear very elaborate and exotic hats.
