TECHNOLOGY

The reusable Handheld Electrolyte and Lab Technology for Humans (rHEALTH) sensor is a compact portable device that employs cutting-edge fluorescence detection optics, innovative microfluidics, and nanostrip reagents to perform a suite of hematology, chemistry, and biomarker assays from a single drop of blood or bodily fluid. Developed to monitor astronaut health on the International Space Station (ISS) and during long-term space flight, terrestrial applications for this ground-breaking technology include biomedical research and point-of-care (POC) diagnostics at a patient’s bedside, in a doctor’s office, or hospital.

The rHEALTH sensor is a self-contained, robust, general-purpose assay system to analyze bodily fluids

  • SOCIAL and ECONOMIC BENEFITS
  • Provide a long-sought comprehensive, handheld analytical system that will directly improve diagnostics for patients in all clinical settings
  • Directly affect all biomedical research on the ISS and in long-term space flight
  • COMMERCIAL and MILITARY APPLICATIONS
  • POC diagnostic functions including portable personal health monitoring, daily lab tests, early detection of bone loss, immune system assessment, and electrolyte management
  • Biomedical research such as study of bone loss in osteoporosis and assessment of drug toxicity and side effects during clinical trials
  • Detection of microbial contaminants in potable water
  • Portable personal health monitor
  • NASA AND SPACE APPLICATIONS
  • Health monitoring of astronauts on the ISS and during long-term space flight in the areas of daily complete blood count measurements, bone loss and immune system assessment, rapid diagnosis of cardiac events, liver function measurement, lipid profiling, real-time health monitoring for urgent care, measurement of physiological effects of solar flares
  • Biomedical research including study of astronaut health in microgravity, space radiation on bone marrow suppressions, astronaut metabolism, and effects of training on astronaut health
