Why insomnia affects mental health
Sleep doctors provide insomnia treatments and the relationship between insomnia and mental health has been well established through several studies. Sleep problems like insomnia are commonly reckoned as a symptom of several mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD. Feeling worried, stressed, and down are among the consequences of poor sleep. Therefore, it is not surprising that insomnia does affect mental health. There is also a bi-directional relationship between mental illness and insomnia. Some 50% of adults experiencing insomnia tend to have mental health issues while nearly 90% of adults who are depressed have sleep problems.
Emotional processing The medical world opines that while the relationship between mental health and insomnia has been established, there is not enough evidence to show how insomnia triggers mental illness. However, researchers hold the view that insomnia can impact the processing of negative emotions in an individual. One study has shown that sleep-deprived individuals show higher emotional reactivity when they see unpleasant messages as opposed to pleasant images or emotional content of a neutral nature. But, people with no sleep deprivation did not show any difference in emotional reactions.
Another study pointed to elevated activity in the emotional processing zone of the brain of people experiencing insomnia when they harnessed a strategy for reducing the negative reactions to images as compared to times when they were not employing any such strategy. The suggestion drawn from these studies, therefore, is that it is difficult for individuals to react appropriately when confronted with negative emotions. Consequently, their sleep difficulties can be exacerbated and their vulnerability to depression heightened.
Insomnia treatment by sleep doctors can also include cognitive behavior therapy including training for interpreting emotional information with lesser negativity. Some evidence is also available to show that issues within brain circuits overlapping those that are designated to regulate our sleepiness timing and our body clocks.
Treating insomnia and mental illness Sleep problems may experience some improvement from treating mental illness, particularly when the symptoms of mental illness are mild. But, insomnia may persist except when it is targeted directly for treatment.
