  1. Supervisor Academy Can Teach Managers Problem Solving Skills Many businesses run into problems involving production or providing their services and these have a direct and negative effect on profitability. However, when managers and supervisors start looking for the causes of the problems, identifying them can in itself be a problem. Supervisor Academy is based in Southsea, England and provides a special training course on problem-solving skills which takes place over eight three-hour sessions on the clients’ site with their managers and supervisors. The training delves deep into the root causes of problems, how to identify them, and how to correct them quickly and permanently. The training enables organisations to raise their performance and processes to a higher level through effective process stabilisation and improves performance by introducing simpler and more reliable methods and processes. Supervisors need to be able to solve problems quickly and effectively by working on two levels, the first of which is containment which the company describes as “stopping the bleeding”, and countermeasures which involves removing the cause over the long term and preventing the problem occurring again. At the containment level, supervisors need to be able to identify problems that are leading to poor quality performance and production, keeping production moving and preventing people conflicts from escalating, and getting things back to a normal level so that everything runs smoothly. At the countermeasure level, the supervisors and managers need to be able to dig deeper into the problem in order to understand the causes, and then

  2. take measures that prevent it from recurring and which actually raise performance to a higher level. The Problem Solving process involves four steps, the first of which is isolating the problem and identifying the problem points, then deciding on a course of solution. Next it is necessary to prepare for the solution which may be improving a job method or may involve developing a person’s skills if they fall short, or could involve altering behaviours of people who may not care. Then the correct action must be taken, and finally the results obtained need to be checked and evaluated.
