  1. Do’s & Don’ts CFA GIRC Experiences from the 2010-2011 edition Dutch-Belgian Winning Team Rotterdam, 18 October 2011 Astrid Herinckx Margaux van der Haert Quentin Bodart Jonathan Lefèvre

  2. How to write a good sell-side analyst report • Start early, be sure to be prepared and have relevant questions for the Q&A session with the management • Look at other analyst reports and the reports of the winners of previous years in order to have a clear idea of the structure and content of a good report • Take advantage of the time available with your CFA mentor • Divide the tasks, be specialised. However, share with each other. • Have an in-depth understanding of the industry • Explain the assumptions made and perform sensibility analyses • Use several valuation methods • Be “reader-friendly” in the presentation of the report

  3. How to give a convincing presentation • Make choices with respect to what you want to say in order for your presentation to be clear. You will not be able to mention everything that is written in your report! • Make sure that your slides are not overloaded • Have a clear storyline, leading to your recommendation • Practisein order to stay into the time limit, make sure that the last person to talk knows what he can skip if necessary • Let everybody talk and answer the questions (specialisation of team members can help to involve everybody in the Q&A) • Have a "question master“ • Practice for the Q&A by asking questions between team members

  4. Conclusion If we had to summarise our experience in a few words: … • Great opportunity to learn from and be in close contacts with professionals • Privileged moment for creating strong ties among group members and have a great team spirit • Skills developed for the GIRC are useful in many other situations! … So, one more thing to say: … It’s great you’re participating!
