This presentation by Dr. Maurice Dawson examines the potential of virtual worlds in facilitating limited prototyping, testing, and training for health information technology (HIT) systems. As the U.S. progresses towards a more technology-driven society, the healthcare industry must adapt to new tools such as social media, mobile computing, and open-source software. The talk covers strategic and operational plans geared towards overcoming resistance to change, current implementations in healthcare, and military applications, emphasizing the importance of early feature introduction and cost-effective training methods.

Abstract • As the United States (US) continues to become a wired society then it is imperative that the majority of the industries within the countries follow suite. As the Department of Defense (DoD) has relied significantly on technology to fight a battle that has become more and more net centric over the years it is time for those industries such as health care to change. The health care industry in its current stage has been identified as technological inept to handle newly available tools such as social media, virtual technology, Open Source Software (OSS), mobile computing, and platforms such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Thus to prepare this industry it is key to test all functionality of new applications that will provide ends users an easy method for accepting these new technological features. • Keywords: Virtual Worlds, Technology Innovation, Health Information Technology, Low Fidelity Prototyping
Strategic & operational plan under the state cooperative agreement • Governance • Policy/Legal • Technical Infrastructure • Business & Technical Operations • Communications/Marketing • Relationships to Medicaid/Medicare
Better Manage Resistors to change Why Use virtual worlds • Introduce new features early • Provide an inexpensive method to train personnel • Provide an inexpensive simulation that allows the doctors to tailor the interface
