  1. Up Your Score Tips for maximizing your Math SAT score Mr Duhaime Bow High School

  2. There are 10 total sections to every SAT Test. • The first section will always be the essay. • There are three math sections on every SAT test. Overview of an SAT Test

  3. One math section will consist of 20 multiple choice questions and you will have 25 minutes to complete it. • One math section will consist of 16 multiple choice questions and you will have 20 minutes to complete it. • One math section will consist of 8 multiple choice questions followed immediately by 10 Student Generated Response (SGR) questions. You will have 25 minutes to complete this entire section. Overview of the Math Sections

  4. You will have a TOTAL of 70 minutes to complete 54 questions; 44 multiple choice and 10 student generated response. • The key is to answer as many correct as possible within each section in the time you have available!!!! Math Section Summary

  5. Unscored sections exist but you won’t know which section it is. These sections are used to rate problems for future tests. TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY!!!! • Within each section, problems increase in level of difficulty. Do easy ones well and don’t worry about getting all the problems correct or finished. Math Help

  6. Surrendering the possibility of a perfect score gives you the best chance to get your highest score possible. • Higher scores come from answering more problems correctly. Avoid working on and answering questions that are too difficult for you. • Learn how to answer more problems correctly by memorizing the directions, knowing how to approach the different problem types and practice, practice, practice!!!!   7. Don’t put too much faith in your calculators. You need to know the math concepts to solve the problems. • Word problems are designed to be confusing. Once you understand what they are asking, the math required should be pretty straight forward. • Most problems don’t involve complex calculations and therefore may be easier to solve in your head. • Problems that involve fractions should be easier to solve WITHOUT the use of your calculator.   8. However, having a calculator tends to make you relax. • Make sure you have a good graphing calculator and that you are familiar with its buttons and function keys. • Get your own, make sure the batteries are new and practice using it in your math classes. Math Help

  10. All of the math needed to be successful on the SAT will be covered in your Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 classes. • To review specific concepts, scan through p.215-376 of The Official SAT Study Guide. Come to class next week with any questions you may have. About the Math Sections

  11. 44 questions of this type • Don’t answer it if you don’t KNOW the answer. • Earn 1 point if correct, 0 points if left blank and you will LOSE .25 points if you answer it incorrectly!!! • Questions at the end of each section are rated more difficult. Don’t worry about answering all the questions!! Help With Multiple Choice

  12. A question is posed followed by five numerical choices. One and only one choice is the correct answer. • If you can do the math, DO THE MATH and answer the question!!! • Sometimes the only way you can answer these questions is to apply the answers to the problem to find the answer that works. • When checking out answers, the most efficient starting point is choice C. If choice C does not fit after inserting it back into the problem, there is a good possibility that it can determine whether C is too large or too small. • If too large, eliminate choices C, D and E. • If too small, eliminate choices A, B and C. • If you can eliminate a couple choices, guessing is OK. If you can do the math, DO THE MATH and answer the question!!! • This technique can be used to answer multiple choice questions involving many variables. • Assign simple values for each variable. • Make sure the values you pick meet the conditions stated in the problem. • Algebra problems become arithmetic.   17. Sawyer earns w dollars an hour for 3x hours and then earns y dollars an hour for x more hours. In terms of w, x and y, how many dollars did he earn altogether? • A. x(w+3y) • B. x(3w+y) • C. 4x(3w+y) • D. 4x(w+y) • E. 4x(w+3y) • Pick some simple values for each variable and you will see that choice B is the correct answer!!   18. If you can do the math, DO THE MATH and answer the question!!! • Try using either “substituting values” or if they make sense “picking values” • If all else fails and you feel you need to answer more questions, try guessing. • Use as a last resort!!!! Multiple Choice – Rules for Guessing!!!

  19. Rule 1 – One of these things looks most like the others. • Rule 2 – Problems get more difficult as you progress within a section. Harder problems should NOT have answers that are easy to get. Multiple Choice – Rules for Guessing!!!

  20. Rule 3 – No more than 3 in a row!! Make sure the three are correct… • Rule 4 –Pick “NON-ANSWERS” at the beginning and not at the end of a section. “Can not be determined” is the right answer 50% of the time at the beginning of a section and 0% of the time at the end.   21. Rule 5 - Choose an answer that contains the number represented in most answer choices. • I • II • III • A. I only • B. II only • C. I and II only • D. I and III only • E. I, II and III Multiple Choice – Rules for Guessing!!!

  22. There are only 10 of these!!! • Review the directions and make sure you know how to fill in your answer key. • The answer must be a number between 0 and 9999 • No negative answers, • Can have more than one correct answer…pick one and fill in your answer key. • 1 point if correct, 0 points if wrong or if left blank. • You don’t loose any points for guessing. If you think you have an solution, record it on your answer key. Student Generated Response
