  1. Symbolism through Dr. Seuss

  2. Warm-up 1/7 • How does this quote relate to how humans deplete natural resources? • “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” -Dr. Seuss

  3. Watch the ebook of The Lorax and take note of how we can relate this to the Earth and our use of resources • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soRbNlPbHEo

  4. Question: • What symbolism is shown in Dr. Seuss’ book “The Lorax” on topics/issues we’ve discussed in science over the past week • You should come up with at least 5 examples

  5. 1st and 3rd period • You are a concerned young activist. Research an activist group or create one of your own. Briefly tell what natural resources they advocate for and write a letter to a company expressing the concerns/effects this will cause in the future if we deplete resources at this rate. • Include suggestions and alternate methods humans can take to conserve our resources. • Be passionate about this matter...If it is well written the company might take your opinion into consideration and change. This must be at least one page

  6. 1st/3rd ExampleDear BP Oil Industries, • I’m writing to express true concern about the large production of oil you extract for trade. Although you may see this as a profitable source of market and income personally, you are hurting the Earth and its resources globally. You have instilled the idea of oil being valuable to our economy, but my question to you is what will we do when it’s used all up? We burn oil at a significant rate in automobiles, planes, ships, etc, to the point where transportation not using oil is looked upon as foreign. The Bicyclists United and I are very concerned about this and we are finally taking a stand…..

  7. 2nd and 5th • You are a powerhouse company that depletes natural resources heavily from the environment. Although your classmates from 1st and 3rd period greatly disagree with your doings, you use your company to maximize all profits. Write a letter defending why you (your company) is justified in taking resources from our environment • Keep in mind of the things we use natural resources for, amounts we use, what will you do without that career, who it helps, etc. • Must be at least a page. If you defend your case passionately and convince your classmates with a valid case, they will continue to let you take resources from the environment

  8. 2nd/ 5th ExampleTo the College Students Against Coal Production Club, • It brings me great sadness that you blame my corporation as a major contributor to the depletion of natural resources. Although you’ve expressed numerous reasons why I shouldn’t continue to be allowed to extract resources from the Earth, you’ve failed to note the abundance of positives that I contribute to your lives and mine. Without me and the coal production industry…..

  9. Assignment Due Date • 1st, 3rd, and 5th student letters are due Wednesday 1/9 • 2nd period is due Tuesday 1/8
