  5. Managing Distributed Development with MultiSite Arizona Rational Users Group Eric J. Ostrander, Comsys http://ejostrander.com

  6. Managing Distributed Development Development can be hindered when teams are not collocated. • ClearCase or ClearQuest at a single, remote site can have slow access times • The sites may not have an electronic connection to each other • Web access is very Spartan compared to a client or command-line interface

  7. What is ClearCase? Establish and maintain the integrity of the products of the software project throughout the project's life cycle. • Configuration Management tool • Version control • Parallel development • Activity based development • Baseline management • MultiSite • Highly customizable • Integrates with numerous other tools

  8. What is ClearQuest? Systematically manage changes to the system. Organize and automate the process of tracking change requests. • Change Management tool • Manage changes to the system • Automate communications • Establish clear responsibility for changes • Gather metrics • MultiSite • Highly customizable • Integrates with numerous other tools

  9. What is MultiSite? MultiSite facilitates coordinated software development for geographically dispersed teams. • Add-on to ClearCase and ClearQuest functionality • Requires an extra license • Works on and between Windows and Unix • Works when there is no electronic connection between sites • Email, cdrom, etc… • Relies on object mastership to ensure changes do not collide

  10. What else does MultiSite do? • Can be used for non-development synchronization • Can be used as a pseudo backup tool • Not real-time • Remote site may receive an email before the change ClearQuest record arrives • MultiSite packets are not encrypted • Used for data transfer, not automated communications • Not useful for the odd developer

  11. When is it appropriate to use MultiSite? • Useful when team members are not co-located • Useful when development is outsourced • Useful when working with unclassified and classified development simultaneously • Useful when working across Unix & Windows • Useful if near real-time data archiving is needed • Not useful as a hot failover system

  12. What is Mastership? • Mastership prevents simultaneous changes to a single object • All objects have mastership in a MultiSite environment • ClearQuest is mastered on a per-record basis • ClearQuest schema is developed at on site • Each individual object in ClearCase has its own mastership • Mastership is not the same as ownership or permissions • Some object masterships can be shared • Mastership can be transferred

  13. Non-development Synchronization MultiSite can be used to synchronize data not related to software development. • Can work independent of ClearCase VOBs (repositories) • Tool and utility distribution • Website mirroring

  14. MultiSite as a Backup Tool ClearCase MultiSite can be used to backup data to another computer. • Good for recovering file content • Not real-time • Cannot be used as a hot failover • Cannot easily be activated if primary server fails • Data must be checked into a VOB • Not all data is replicated in MultiSite

  15. MultiSite Summary • ClearCase and ClearQuest have MultiSite capability • Coordinates the efforts of a dispersed development team • Requires an extra license • Changes not seen in real time • Can be used to supplement backup system • Once set up, requires little to no maintenance

  16. Demo Alfred Tse will demonstrate ClearCase MultiSite. Eric Ostrander will answer any additional technical questions on the side.
