Warm-up What is a parable? Why would these be used?
  2. Parable A simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels
  3. the Good Samaritan & The Prodigal Son
  4. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a parable told by Jesus and is mentioned in only one of the gospels of the New Testament.
  5. According to the Gospel of Luke (10:29-37) a traveler (who may or may not be Jewish) is beaten, robbed, and left half dead along the road. First a priest and then a Levite came by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a Samaritan comes by. Samaritans and Jews generally despised each other, but the Samaritan helps the injured man.
  6. Jesus is described as telling the parable in response to a question regarding the identity of the "neighbour" which Leviticus 19:18 says should be loved.
  7. Leviticus 19:18 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
  8. Portraying a Samaritan in positive light would have come as a shock to Jesus' audience. It is typical of his provocative speech in which conventional expectations are inverted.
  9. Some Christians have interpreted the parable allegorically, with the Samaritan representing Jesus Christ, who saves the sinful soul. Others, however, discount this allegory as unrelated to the parable's original meaning, and see the parable as exemplifying the ethics of Jesus.
  10. The parable has inspired painting, sculpture, poetry, and film. The colloquial phrase "good Samaritan," meaning someone who helps a stranger, derives from this parable, and many hospitalsand charitable organizations are named after the Good Samaritan.
  11. Good Samaritan Laws The purpose of the Good Samaritan Law is to protect individuals that assist a victim during a medical emergency.  Most Good Samaritan laws are created specifically for the general public.  The law assumes that there is no medically trained person available to assist the victim.  Since the Good Samaritan typically does not have medical training, the law protects him or her from being liable from injury or death caused to the victim during a medical emergency.
  12. Prodigal Son a waywardsonwho squanders his inheritance but returns home to find that his father forgives him.
  13. FaThEr ElDeR YoNgEr
  14. The main character = the forgiving father, whose character remains constant throughout the story, is a picture of God. In telling the story, Jesus identifies Himself with God in His loving attitude to the lost. The younger son symbolizes the lost (the tax collectors and sinners of that day) the elder brother represents the self-righteous (the Pharisees and teachers of the law of that day)
  15. Rembrandt Dutch painter 1600s Thought to be one of the best Dutch painters, EVER! One of the greatest of his time
  16. Rembrandt and Saskia in the parable of the Prodigal Son.Saskia was his wife
  17. Rembrandt The Return of the Prodigal Son
