Introduction to Burn Surgery- Burn pain can be one of the most intense and prolonged types of pain. Burn pain is difficult to control because of its unique characteristics, its changing patterns, and its various components. If you have a severe wound, such as a burn that has limited your mobility, causes a loss of sensation, or is cosmetically unappealing, plastic surgery may be an option. If your wound is severe, you may have to undergo debriding, which is the removal of dead tissue, prior to reconstructive surgery.
Types of Burn- Post Burn Deformities Post Burn Contracture Acute Burn
Treatment - The treatment of a burn depends on the type of burn. However, all burns must be kept clean and adequate dressing should be applied based on severity of wounds. Pain management is very important as inadequate control can interfere with wound care. It is also important to reassess wounds for signs of infection and other long term issues, such as scarring and tightening of the skin over joints and muscles making them difficult to move.
Emergency Treatment for burn- • Water-Based Treatments. Your care team may use techniques such as ultrasound mist therapy to clean and stimulate the wound tissue. • Fluids to Prevent Dehydration. You may need intravenous (IV) fluids to prevent dehydration and organ failure. • Pain and Anxiety Medications. Healing burns can be incredibly painful. You may need morphine and anti-anxiety medications — particularly for dressing changes. • Burn Creams and Ointments. If you are not being transferred to a burn center, your care team may select from a variety of topical products for wound healing, such as bacitracin and silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene). These help prevent infection and prepare the wound to close. • Dressings. Your care team may also use various specialty wound dressings to prepare the wound to heal. If you are being transferred to a burn center, your wound will likely be covered in dry gauze only. • Drugs that fight infection. If you develop an infection, you may need IV antibiotics. • Tetanus shot. Your doctor might recommend a tetanus shot after a burn injury.
