  1. I am NOT a real sponge Invertebrates That sponge is cool!! Poriferia

  2. Characteristics • simplest of multicellular animals • Specialized cells, have a nucleus • eukaryotic • no true tissues • Poriferia = pore-bearer • Originally thought of as plants

  3. Examples of sponges • Venus flower basket, • bath sponge

  4. Support • Spicules – hard structural protein fibers • support and provides protection • Spongin – soft protein fibers • – calcium, silica or protein – collagen

  5. Movement • sessile (don’t move)

  6. Collecting food • Flagella move back & forth • collar cells capture food

  7. Digestion • by vacuoles • Amebocytes

  8. Circulation • collar cell flagella move water through, amoeba like cells move food vacuoles around

  9. Reproduction • Hermaphrodites • Sexual and asexual • Budding – new growth that breaks off • Gemmeles – released when adult dies • Regeneration – new body parts regenerate

  10. Importance to nature • clean/filter huge amounts of water • Home to fish

  11. Importance to economy • minor, bath sponge formerly very important

  12. Draw and label a sponge using these terms • Define these terms • Mesophyll - • Epidermis – pinacocytes • Porocytes - • Spongocoel - • Choanocytes – collar cells • Amoebocyte - • Osculum – • Spicules –
