  4. Modem Pool Update • Beginning 3-year process to phase out modem pool access • Current modem pool will be upgraded and in place 6/04 – 6/07 • New solutions provides: • More management / maintenance features • Reduces operating costs

  5. Initial Details • There will be a new dial in number • Reduction to 300 modems may increase busy signals and decrease access • Call time-out after 1 hour • IP only • Other dial-in solutions will not be granted access to the network

  7. What is Document Imaging (DI)? • provides digital document management using scanning, storage, retrieval systems • improves efficiency and decreases the volume of paper that is processed and stored.  • available at Emory University since 1995 • Optix is DI solution

  8. Optix implemented DI modules • Imaging • Optix Web • bar coding • COLD • OCR page • publishing/promoting • text search libraries

  10. DI advantages: • on-line access to documents • quick response to customer inquiry • reduce document storage space • document retrieval and sharing • online storage managed in central location

  11. Why upgrade? • 80% of DI users are web users • thin client added functionality • COLD records available for viewing using thin client • LDAP compliant • Single sign on • Link with healthcare LDAP

  12. Upgrade when? • Weekend of June 18-20, 2004

  13. Release requirements: • IE version 6 or higher • JavaSun v1.4.24 available at http://java.com/en/index.jsp select free workstation download • Win2000 do not have JavaSun, download JavaSun plug in • WinXP workstation comes with JavaSun, no action required

  16. Clean Room • Proactive step to address virus problem • Student laptops only • Focused on addressing top talkers as identified by NetCom • ATG aggressively contacting and directing students to the clean room

  17. Details • Located 3RD floor NDB • Staffed by ATG and CS resources • Utilizes eVax and other tools to clean systems • Receiving approximately 7 systems per day • Average MTTR is 4 hours • Average response time is 48 hours

  18. DeskNet • Responsible for defining hardware recommendations and software standards • Cross functional team with representation from the campus and ITD • Stress Campus Standards, not ITD

Scope • Hardware Recommendations • Annual definition of recommended PC and Apple configuration for standard business user • Software Standards • Desktop applications and/or clients necessary to communicate with enterprise applications • Identify one standard for each platform (PC/Apple) and no more than 2 alternatives

DeskNet Methodology • DeskNet Working Group reviews, modifies and defines during a scheduled meeting • Hardware recommendations and Software standards are reviewed every academic year • Spring is used as trigger to update the standards • All standards are posted on it.emory.edu • Any significant changes to a standard will have a detailed migration and communications plan • Example: McAfee to Symantec
