faq why a 15 fundraising cost
FAQ: Why a 15% Fundraising Cost ?
  • Pledges made through the GCWCC are subject to a 15% fee for the costs of fundraising by United Way Ottawa (as the manager of the GCWCC)
    • Consider the 15% in comparison to the national average of 26% applied by most major charities in Canada — that is 11% less than the average!
    • Consider also that within the for-profit sector, costs vary anywhere from 15% to over 40%.
  • Fundraising costs includes advertising and promotion, processing, charitable tax receipting, accounting, reporting and auditing.
    • Treasury Board of Canada requires rigorous governance and accountability practices from United Way

  • Did you know…
    • GCWCC fundraising costs will never be higher than $750.
faq what is the 5 pledge fulfillment
FAQ: What is the 5% pledge fulfillment?
  • A pledge differs from a donation
    • A donation is an immediate transaction, while a pledge is a promise to provide money in the future through payroll deductions, monthly credit card payments, or post-dated cheques
  • When a pledge is made, the GCWCC applies a 5% adjustment for pledge fulfillment
    • It is used to honor promised pledges that have been “lost” (circumstances sometimes impact a donors’ ability to fulfill their pledge, i.e. long-term leave of absence, changes to credit card information, etc.)
    • Note: This 5% does not apply to donations (cash, one-time credit card, cheque)
  • This 5% is not money that United Way, as manager of the GCWCC, keeps
    • It is based on the actual five year assessment of an average pledge loss rate of 5% each year over the last five years.
  • More information is available on the GCWCC website
    • http://www.gcwcc-ccmtgc.org/en/about_GCWCC/faq.php
faq how much should i give

faq first time donor s super credit
FAQ: First-Time Donor’s Super Credit
  • As part of the 2013 federal budget, the First-Time Donor’s Super Credit (FTDSC) gives first-time donors and those who haven’t claimed a charitable donation in the last five years an extra 25% on their tax credit for charitable gifts.

THE DETAILS

  • The FTDSC is applicable to any single cash donation up to $1000 made by an individual or couple between now and 2017.
  • Under this time-limited incentive:
    • Donations up to $200 receive a 40% tax credit.
    • Donations between $201 and $1000 receive a 54% tax credit.

faq why should i give through the gcwcc instead of directly to my charity of choice
FAQ: Why should I give through the GCWCC instead of directly to my charity of choice?
  • GCWCC administrative fees are low: donors should definitely do their homework and see where the best bang for their buck is!
  • A GCWCC donation is also valuable to your charity of choice: THEY don’t have to spend the resources required to fundraise. Your donation is truly a gift.
  • We protect your privacy: we don’t share your information with anyone (unless you request us to do so)
  • A one-stop-shop: you can give to ALL your favorite charities at the same time – and get a single receipt (if paying through a single method)
  • Finally: payroll deduction. Spread your charitable giving throughout each pay!
faq when will my charities get my donation
FAQ: When will my charities get my donation?
  • The GCWCC payout schedule to charitable organizations is as follows:
    • February : 1st payment for all cash/cheque/one-time credit card donations
    • August: 2nd payment for first half of pledged donations
    • February: 3rd payment for second half of pledged donations(and 1st payment for all “new year” cash/cheque/one-time credit card donations)
faq when will i get my receipt
FAQ: When will I get my receipt?

This answer changes depending on the method of payment.

  • For payroll deductions – it will be on your T4 not next year, but the following year
    • While you are canvassed in year 2013, you will be fulfilling your pledge at each pay in 2014
    • That means that your total donation made in 2014 will be featured on your T4 in 2015
  • For cash and cheque – a receipt will be issued in February/March of next year
  • For one-time credit card – depends whether you are donating through ePledge or the Gift Form
    • If donating through ePledge, you will be emailed your receipt right away
    • If donating via the Gift form, a receipt will be issued in February /March of next year
  • For monthly credit card donations – a receipt will be issued once all payments have been processed
    • While you are canvassed in year 2013, you will be fulfilling your pledge once a month in 2014
    • That means that your total donation made in 2014 will be receipted in February /March 2015
faq what if someone wants the charity to know that they have given
FAQ: What if someone wants the charity to know that they have given?
  • Some donors want the charity that they are supporting to know that they have made a donation
    • This can be for a number of reasons, including participation and or religious obligations
  • What is important to know and to share with the donor is that, in these cases, the GCWCC cannot ensure donor privacy

Did you know…

When a donor requests that a charity be informed of his/her donation — including the amount — the GCWCC advises that charity of the donor’s gift in the original amount, before fees.

  • How can donors ensure that the charity is informed of their gift?
  • If giving by ePledge, the donor must tick the appropriate boxes on the verification pages
  • If giving through the Gift Form, on a separate sheet of paper stapled to the gift form, the donor must
    • State that they wish for (name of charities) to know of their donation;
    • Indicate whether they wish for these charities to be informed of the amount of the donation; and
    • Date and sign
faq epledge and giving to a specific program within a charitable organisation
FAQ: ePledge and Giving to a specific program within a charitable organisation

To ensure that a donation is directed to the exact program a donor wishes to support, the process is as follows:

  • Access ePledge
  • Once at the Designation page, scroll to the bottom to "Manually Add a Registered Charity".
    • Click “Enter your charity manually”
  • On the "Write-in designation” page
    • Ensure all fields are completed
    • In the “Other Information” field, write "designate to (name of the program)“. Note that there is a 50 character limit in this field.
    • Click "Add"
  • NOTE: this will ensure that, in the future — as long as the main organisation maintains its RR number— this (name of program) can be searched by keyword or RR number in ePledge
