  1. Charles Dickens The man whogave voice to the poor.

  2. A DifficultChildhood • Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on the 7thFebuary 1812. He had six other brothers and 2 sisters. • In 1822, all the family moved to London, where John Dickens (Charles’s father) worked as a clerk in the navy pay office. • Later on in, 1824, when Charles was 12, was a nightmare for the whole family. On 9 February, two days after his twelfth birthday, Charles was sent to work at Warren's Blacking Factory. That same month, John Dickens was sent to prison becausehe didn’t repay a debt.

  3. First Steps • In 1830, Dickens met his first love, Maria Beadnell, (she later will inspire the character of Dora in David Copperfield.) Maria's parents disapproved the relationship between them and sent her to school in Paris. • In 1833 Charles wrote his first story called A Dinner at PoplarWalk. It waspublished in the London Periodical, Monthly Magazine.Later on, in 1836 hestarted his firstcollection of pieces: Sketches by Boz. • This led to his first book called The Pickwick Papers. At the same time, his success continued, making Oliver Twist. He continued to work, by editing journals through his career.

  4. Marriage & Separation • On 2 April 1836, he married Catherine Thomson Hogarth the daughter of George Hogarth. • After a brief honeymoon in Chalk, Kent, they set up home in Bloomsbury. They had ten children. • Charles and Catherine Dickens separated in 1858, because of the actress he met, called Ellen Turner. Dickens never said anything more than he and his wife had grown apart.

  5. The Trips To America In 1842, Dickens and his wife Catherine, made his first trip to the United States and Canada,Dickens who was very succesful in America gave lectures but was also very impressed by slavery that he condemned in his writing. He went back to America with all his family in 1867, during his travels, he saw a significant change in the people and the circumstances of America. His final appearance was at a banquet the American Press held in his honor at Delmonico's on 18 April, when he promised never to criticize America again.  Charles Dickens in America

  6. The Train Accident & Death • In 1865, Dickens was involved in the famous Staplehurst rail crash. The only carriage to remain on the track was the one in which Dickens was travelling. Before leaving, he remembered the unfinished manuscript for Our Mutual Friend, and he returned to his carriage to retrieve it. Dickens later used this event as material for his short ghost story The Signal Man. • The incidentleft Charles veryshaken. When Charles was 58, while he was writing “The Mystery Of Edwin Drood” he suffered a stroke, and died at Gad’s Hill Place. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, in the Poet’s Corner.
