  5. Be Aware of the World...and how your library fits in Be Community Centered Be political Advocate Access for all Educate yourself!

  6. Respect the Institution • Its Ideals… • Its place in Civilization… • Its Collections... • Its staff & administration… • Its Trustees!

  7. Hire the Best ….not the cheapest or most convenient; Give them clear expectations; Evaluate regularly; And pay them well!

  8. Delegate responsibility for today; assume responsibility for tomorrow • The Director is your CEO • Focus on Mission/Vision/Values • But remember fiscal oversight

  9. Stand Up for your Beliefs If not you…Who?

  10. Conduct Business Professionally • Manage legal, respectful, efficient Board meetings; • Represent the institution with class & distinction; • Know the law.

  11. Embrace change; Encourage failure • Cherish risk; • Accept mistakes as proof of progress; • Be willing to eliminate peripheral services.

  12. Seek Diversity everywhere • Across the table; • In the staff; • In your services; • In your view of the world.

  13. Use the Library • Be a patron! • Window Shop… • Question with a Smile 
