  20. A TIME OF SHARING WITH GOD’S CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

  21. LUKE 18:9-14 (AEV) Read by Elder Roy Palk, J.D. Jesus told this parableto some who trusted in only themselvesthinking that they alone were righteous and regarded otherswith contempt: Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank youthat I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers,or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week;I give a tenth of all my income.”

  22. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his chest in repentance and saying,“God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this tax collector was made right with God,and went down to his home in peace. But the Pharisee, went down to his home unchanged and unforgiven. For all who exalt themselveswill be humbled, but all who humble themselveswill be exalted.

  23. THE SONG OF PREPARATION #548 ‘AS THE DEER’ (1) As the deer panteth for the water, So my soul longeth after You. You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You.

  24. (2) You’re my Friend and You are my Brother, Even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, So much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You.

  25. (3) I want You more than gold or silver, Only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver, And the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You.

  26. THE SERMON GOD IS THE GREAT EQUALIZER Text: Luke 18:9-14 Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein Bayshore Gardens Community Church

  27. Proverbs 23:7 For as a person IS in his HEART, so IS that person. 1 Samuel 16:7 The Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the OUTWARD appearance,BUT GOD looks in on the HEART.”

  28. The T W O PERSONALITIES in this parable: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

  29. LUKE 18:11 “God, I thank you that I am NOT like other men ‑‑robbers, evildoers, adulterers ‑‑or even like this TAX COLLECTOR.” LUKE 18:13 But the tax collector stood at a distance away. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his chest and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” [ θεός ἱλάσθητί μoι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ ] “God, have mercy on me, THE sinner.”

  30. THE FIRST IMPLIED QUESTION TO CONSIDER IN THIS PARABLE: WHY DID JESUS CRITICIZE THE PHARISEE?

  31. EPHESIANS 2:8-9 It is by grace you have been saved, through faithand this not from yourselves. It is the gift of God ‑‑ not by works, so that no one can boast. ROMANS 3:20,22 No one will be declared righteous in God’s sightby observing the law;Rather, through the lawwe become conscious of sin. This right standing in God’s sightcomes through faith in Jesus Christto all who believe.

  32. THE SECOND IMPLIED QUESTION TO CONSIDER IN THIS PARABLE: WHY DID JESUS COMMEND THE TAX COLLECTOR?

  33. PROVERBS 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not find happinessbut whoever confesses his sinsand then renounces them will find mercy. 1 JOHN1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  34. Always remember that GOD IS THE GREAT EQUALIZER Luke 18:14b For everyone who EXALTS himself will be HUMBLED,and he who HUMBLES himself will be EXALTED.

  35. The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. 41. (2) I praise You, Lord, for cleansing me from sin; Fulfill Your Word and make me pure within. Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame; Grant my desire to magnify Your name.

  42. (3) Lord, take my life, and make it wholly Yours; Fill my poor heart with Your great love divine. Take all my will, my passion, self and pride; I now surrender, Lord, in me abide.
