  1. Connection between Ayurveda and Yoga Yoga and Ayurveda complement each other in such a way that it can be said that they are the halves of the same whole. While Ayurveda is predominantly about the use of natural and medicinal herbs for a more holistic living, Yoga is a set of postures and exercises that promote internal healing. Yoga prepares your body to become a receptacle for the goodness of Ayurveda that you pour into it. Combining yoga and Ayurveda can lead to the fulfilment of the body, mind and soul. How are Yoga and Ayurveda related? Since both Yoga and Ayurveda are branches of Vedic science, they also have similar end goals. Ayurveda helps you to understand your body’s constitution, the doshas and can help you embrace a better lifestyle that incorporates more natural ingredients and keeps synthetic and artificial ingredients at bay. Yoga is the practice of asanas, meditation and breathing exercises that can clear your mind and help quieten the thoughts that make you restless and anxious. It helps you to maintain a balance between the doshas, so that you have clarity of purpose regarding where you want to be in terms of both emotional and physical wellbeing. How is knowledge of Ayurveda relevant to yoga?

  2. Yoga and Ayurveda encourages you to become a healthier and a more balanced version of your former self. Once you have incorporated yoga and ayurveda in your life, you will find it difficult to return to your former ways of life. Ayurveda can help you get rid of the toxins in your body, and promotes self- purification through the purge of unhealthy practices. On the other hand, Yoga relaxes your muscles, and you become more agile and flexible, letting you do all the things that you wanted to and explore the beautiful world around. Ayurveda is all about knowing how your body works and reacts to the different elements and when applied to yoga, it can help you decipher practices that will best help you reach that goal. The potent combination of the two can make you invincible. What are the three pillars of Ayurveda? The three pillars of Ayurveda, or Stambha, as they are known in Sanskrit, form the basis of Ayurvedic knowledge and practice. They are the elements of nature, and being in sync with these elements can promote health and happiness in your life. Vata– which is air or ether; Pitta– which is fire and water; and Kapha– which is water and earth, are the three predominant pillars of Ayurveda. Addtionally, there are three sub-divisions or Upastambhas, as well. They are the intake of proper food, or Aahar, for proper digestion. The next is, sleeping well or Nidra; and the third is management of sexual energy, or Brahmacharya.

  3. Eating unhealthy will lead to improper digestion and hinder your body’s ability to absorb the nutrients that is needed for its growth and survival. Improper nutrition leads to illnesses resulting from malnourishment, hence proper Aahar is a major pillar of Ayurveda. Restlessness and anxiety can lead to insomnia and poor sleep patterns, which in turn leads to even more fatigue and lethargy, robbing you of your life force to do the vital things in life. Proper Nidra is hence the second important pillar. An overactive sexual life can lead to the loss of valuable energy, or Ojas, and can leave you devoid of the strength to engage in productive physical activity, so the practice of Brahmacharya is the third essential pillar. Which came first-Yoga or Ayurveda? It is not easy to say whether Ayurveda or Yoga came first, because both of them originated around the same time in the Vedic ages and both find explicit mention in the Vedas. Both these streams flourished between the 6th century BC and 2nd century CE. However, the practice of Ayurveda was suppressed during the British rule as quack therapy, one of the weapons the colonial rulers wielded to demolish all that was rich and good about the country. However, modern medical systems have seen a resurgence of Ayurveda and modern science is extensively researching the benefits of plants, herbs and exploring the different ways of holistic living.
