  1. Media Regulation Laws in India – A Brief TheMedia Regulation Laws in India have been recently drafted into perspective. For a long time, the media sector war was primarily governed by the Prasar Bharti Act 1990, the Cable Networks Act 1995. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regulated the sector. These bodies have been responsible for drafting policies and rules that would become the guidelines for the media sector, primarily the electronic and broadcasting sectors. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is also responsible for giving permission or license to the media. Be it a foreign media or a national entity, under the Media Regulation Laws in India, the license application needs to go to the Ministry regularly. When the permission comes through, the applicant must follow all the statutory compliances and conditions mentioned by the Ministry. It is also mandatory that the Ministry of Home Affairs gives security clearance to the licensee. If the party is offering uplinking services, the licensee needs to get an additional clearance from the Department of Space. Also, permission is required from the WPC for wireless use and access. The legislature for OTT (Over the Top) platforms and online news portals is still being drafted by the authorities in India. For a level playing field for concerned players, two areas are being looked into - publishing fake content, or sensitive news is being looked into. The effort is being termed as self-regulation in the digital media and is being discussed at the highest levels in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. There is news that either a self-regulating body on the lines of the Press Council of India will be formed while the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act can be amended to encompass regulations. Understanding the media landscape in India can be daunting because of the various laws in place for different media types. Also, many regulations are still being discussed, with work in progress for regulating self-regulations. It is good
