  1. Are you Ignorant? (2 Cor. 2:3-11)

  2. Ignorance Defined • “…denotes ignorance on the part of the Jews regarding Christ, Ac. 13:17; of the Gentiles in regard to God 17:30; Eph. 4:18 (here including the idea of willful blindness: see Rom. 1:28, not the ignorance which mitigates guilt…” - W.E. Vine

  3. How People Perceive the Devil • 1, 871 people surveyed • Four out of ten Christians (40%) strongly agreed that Satan “is not a living being but is a symbol of evil.” An additional two out of ten Christians (19%) said they “agree somewhat” with that perspective. • A minority of Christians indicated that they believe Satan is real by disagreeing with the statement: one-quarter (26%) disagreed strongly and about one-tenth (9%) disagreed somewhat. • The remaining 8% were not sure what they believe about the existence of Satan. • Inconsistency: About half (47%) of the Christians who believed that Satan is merely a symbol of evil nevertheless agreed that a person can be under the influence of spiritual forces such as demons. • - The Barna Group, Ltd (2009)

  4. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • "The Ruler of This World" • "Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. • (John 12:31 NKJV) • Quite Literal: • Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." (Matthew 4:8-9 NKJV)

  5. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • “The God Of This Age” • whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV)

  6. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • “The Prince Of The Power Of The Air…the spirit” (Eph 2:2) • in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (Ephesians 2:2 NKJV)

  7. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • “The Dragon, That Old Serpent, The Devil, Satan” • He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; (Revelation 20:2 NKJV)

  8. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • “That Wicked One,” • We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. (1 John 5:18 NKJV)

  9. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • A Cunning Serpent • Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1ff NKJV)

  10. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • “A Murderer” • "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44 NKJV)

  11. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • "Beelzebub" the “ruler of the demons” • Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." (Matthew 12:24 NKJV) • And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? (2 Corinthians 6:15 NKJV)

  12. Nature of Satan Revealed In Titles Used to Describe Him • A Lion: • Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8 NKJV) • "Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Revelation 2:10 NKJV)

  13. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • Lies: • "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44 NKJV)

  14. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • Lies: • Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 17. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • Fear (Confrontation): • whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV) • But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. (1 John 2:11 NKJV)

  19. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • Preachers: • For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. (2 Timothy 4:3-4 NKJV)

  20. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • #1 The Members of the Church (Refusal to Forgive the Sinner): • But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person. (1 Corinthians 5:11 NKJV)

  21. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • #1 The Members of the Church (Refusal to Forgive the Sinner): • so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. (2 Corinthians 2:7-8 NKJV)

  23. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • #1 The Members of the Church (Refusal to Forgive the Sinner): • A little leaven leavens the whole lump. (Galatians 5:9 NKJV) • Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." (1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV)

"But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:14-15 NKJV)

  26. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Devices: • #2 The Members of the Church (Tolerant Attitudes Toward Sin): • "that you may bear your own shame and be disgraced by all that you did when you comforted them. (Ezekiel 16:54 NKJV)

  27. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Goals: • Keep Us From Things With a Spiritual Focus • Get Us Back Into the World: • for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world…(2 Timothy 4:10a NKJV)

  28. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Goals: • Keep Us From Things With a Spiritual Focus • Get Us Back Into the World • Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15 NKJV)

  29. We Are Not Ignorant of Satan’s Goals: • Keep Us From Things With a Spiritual Focus • Get Us Back Into the World • Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4 NKJV)

  30. How To Protect Yourself From Satan’s Devices: • Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand…

  31. How To Protect Yourself From Satan’s Devices: • Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints-- (Ephesians 6:11-18 NKJV)

  32. How To Protect Yourself From Satan’s Devices: • Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NKJV)
