  2. A STATE OF EMERGENCY “This is a rescue mission. We are walking by this problem and not paying attention to it. We took for granted it had to be that way, and it didn’t.” Assemblyman Sandre Swanson Chair of the Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color

  3. A STATE OF EMPOWERMENT “This is a struggle for equity, which means a struggle for power.” Dr. Tony Iton, California Endowment

  4. THE REBIRTH OF A MOVEMENT “Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for 5,000 years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.” W.E.B. DuBois, The Freedom to Learn (1949)

  5. UNITED WE STAND FOR OUR CHILDREN “No great victories are won in a war for the transformation of a whole people without total participation. Less than this will create a new society; it will only evoke more sophisticated token amelioration.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? (1967)

  6. A COLLECTION OF WOUNDED COMMUNITY MEMBERS • Casualties from previous generations of educational system failure-Educators, Parents, Community, Children and youth • Educators have been marginalized, isolated, and reprimanded for being change agents. • Parents have been blamed, belittled, and demeaned. • Community has been made powerless by covert strategies of exclusion.

  7. SAVE OUR CHILDREN • Children have been pre-diagnosed, pre-classified, over-prescribed, over-medicated, and over-looked. • Children have been hurt and wounded in the classrooms, cafeterias, study halls, and administrative offices. • Children have been dismissed, discounted, disengaged, and over-disciplined. • Children have few coping mechanisms. They act out in deep pain with anger, violence, and self-medication, and self-injury.

  8. RECLAIMING OUR RICH HISTORY • “Our kids today lack self-esteem and self-worth. They do not know their history, and thus have no future, which brings self-destruction.” Retired teacher of 33 years. • “How can you expect the master to teach our children? I am not mad at him. It is only natural to care and take care of your own. It is when you put discriminatory systems in place that I have a problem.” Retired pastor of 37 years.

  9. OUR MISSING LINK “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” Carter G. Woodson The Miseducation of the Negro(1933)

  10. SOLUTIONSWE MUST RETELL OUR STORY • We must change the community narrative. • We must escape the negativity and superficiality of that which in essence is not our own, and return to the true narrative that speaks of our communal and and familial struggles, failures, victories, values, habits, attitudes, behaviors, aspirations, and faith.

  11. Our Time has Come! • Be part of our social and spiritual team. • Membership is free! • Requirements- be part of the solution in your community. • If you cannot actively participate, pray or send us positive thoughts. PEACE BE WITH YOU!
