DECT Uses TDMA Good for Voice 802.11 Uses CSMA/CA Good for Data SWAP TDMA + CSMA/CA Good for Voice & Data Optimized for small networks (in home) HomeRF Origins Both voice and data are important for home RF
Where does HomeRF fit? • It handles voice like DECT or PHS, but... • Frequency hopping • 20 ms frames • interleaved up and down links • Retransmission (single) • It handles data like 802.11, but... • Relaxed PHY layer specs to reduce cost • Beacons to manage isochronous traffic • Simplified protocol (no PCF) • Unlike PHS, DECT or 802.11, SWAP supports TCP/IP network traffic at speeds of up to 2Mb/s - and supports PC enabled cordless telephones

HOME INDEX Fridge pad Cordless Telephone CP PSTN Device Types TDMA - Isochronous (I node) > minimum latency -telephones, etc. CSMA - Asynchronous (A node) > TCP/IP traffic • CP - Connection point…can manage a network or act as an A node • Can be USB, PCI, PC-Card, Device Bay, etc. • CP can place calls even when PC is down • Three CP classes 19

The SWAP Frame D4 D3 D2 D1 B D3 D4 Contention period Hop Hop • Hybrid TDMA/CSMA frame • Up to 6 I nodes, with retransmission • Virtually unlimited A nodes • Beacon from CP sets frame structure (if voice present) • Frequency hopping, 50/sec • 2 or 4 GFSK yields 1 or 2 Mb/s • Supports TCP/IP voice • Range up to 50 meters indoors CSMA/CA access mechanism U4 U3 U2 U1 U3 U4 Superframe - 20ms

The PC interface • SWAP’s PC connection is designed for use under Windows 98 , NT5, and beyond • Wake on ring • Connection Oriented NDIS (NDIS 5…for NT5) • A nodes become 802.3 networking devices • I nodes become ATM clients to TAPI Proxy in NT5 • Win95/98 will support some types of streaming • Standard interfaces to Windows 95 and 98 will be connectionless • Connection oriented streaming applications will be vendor specific Product names are trademarked by their respective companies

Handset initiates voice transfer to PC TDMA I Node • Application accepts streaming audio from CP Application CP IWU Co-NDIS • Application performs speech recognition and sends commands back down stack PC CP • For automatic call placement, CP dials number and connects handset CSMA A Node Grandma’s 3 cups flour 1 cup grated chocolate 1 cup sugar 1 stick butter 1/2 cup chopped walnuts minutes. PC initiates ISP connection (modem, ISDN, UDSL, Cable, etc.) • Applications on host PC can access ISP immediately • Remote CSMA nodes access ISP through NAT and TCP/IP • Remote CSMA nodes can also share files and printers Grandma’s 3 cups flour 1 cup grated chocolate 1 cup sugar 1 stick butter 1/2 cup chopped walnuts minutes. • Ad hoc peer-peer transfers between nodes do not require resources of “server” PC HOME INDEX Fridge pad Usage - ISP Sharing Voice traffic can also be active TDMA I Node Application CP IWU Co-NDIS CSMA A Node PC CP USB PSTN CSMA A Node
