  2. John • Wrote 5 books of the New Testament • Gospel of John • 1st, 2nd, 3rd John • The Revelation • Younger brother of James the Apostle • Known as a Son of Zebedee (Mark 3:17) • Known as a Son of Thunder (Mark 3:17) • Known as the Apostle of Love

  3. John • Part of inner circle of Jesus • raise Jairus’ daughter • glory of the Transfiguration • Agony in the garden

  4. John • What he did. • Mark 9:38 – tried to stop people teaching and doing good works for Jesus • Mark 10:37 – wanted to sit at his right or left hand • Luke 9:54 – call down fire from heaven to consume them. • IS THERE ANY WONDER HE IS CALLED A SON OF THUNDER?

John • What he saw and heard from Jesus. • Mark 9:39 “Do not stop him.” • Mark 10:38-39 “You do not know what you are asking…You will drink my cup” • Luke 9:55-56 “He turned and rebuked them, ‘You do not know what manner of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man came not to destroy people’s lives but to save them.”

  6. John • John loved the truth • uses word 50+ times • followed Jesus who was “the truth” • 3 John 4 “I have NO GREATER JOY than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” • 1 John 2:4 “Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

  7. John • Why he would stop someone who was not following them from preaching Jesus • Why he would want to sit at his right or left hand • Why he would want to call down fire from heaven on those who would not open their door to Jesus • John’s problem • He was all truth and no love.

  8. John • What changed John? He was the only apostle who was at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified.

  9. John What John Did. What John saw Jesus do • Mark 9:38 – He would stop a man from teaching in Jesus name • He would ask for a place at his right or left side • He would call down from heaven fire to consume the enemies of God. • Luke 23:43 – Accept a man that had not followed him continually. “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” • Matthew 27:38 – Who saw who was at his right and left “Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left” • Luke 23:34 – he did not call down fire from heaven to consume them who would not open their heart to him, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”

  10. John • What John learned. • There is no greater love than truth. There is no greater truth than love. God is Truth, “I am the way the truth and life;” and God is Love. They are inseparable! • Used truth 50+ times • Used love 80+ times

John • What happened to John • He saw the Lord die. • He saw his brother James beheaded. • He saw each Apostle before him martyred. • He was the last one left. • He never stopped proclaiming Christ; he was a son of Thunder! • An Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, a servant to his God, and a man like you and I!
