  4. A NEW ATTITUDE • People will be looking inward to personal relationships- as the physical and emotional foundation that supports them.

  5. All consuming jobs of the 1990s are giving way to greater emphasis on achieving emotional gratification and social improvement. Transformation stimulated by 911 terrorist attacks, Enron scandal, and a slowed economy. The Washington TimesJune 24, 2002

  6. 77 percent of Americans want to spend more time with their families. 19 percent think making a lot of money is important

  7. Personal liberty and material security do not in themselves bring contentment.

  8. People will prioritize ‘life experiences’ over job security. • Health is a life-quality issue. • Personal and family nutrition is a significant casual and serious conversation.

  9. Being a consumer of the arts Attending jazz, classical, music, opera, musical plays, ballet, and art museums Attending sporting events Sightseeing Dining Shopping Nightlife Visiting historical sites What are people doing as diversions from work????

IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOLS AND THE WHOLE OF SOCIETY • Consider how business, government, education and other institutions can contribute to work-life balance. • Unless people recharge their batteries, they’re going to burn out way too early. • Provide students with a greater number of humanities and arts courses- helping students learn how to build relationships and collaborate.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOLS AND THE WHOLE OF SOCIETY • Attract more young people and seasoned workers into public service careers, including education. • People are placing a higher value on loyalty and engagement in work environments – like teaching- valuing relationships and opportunities to change lives.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOLS AND THE WHOLE OF SOCIETY • Pay more attention to emotional health. • Schools and colleges play a key educational role in building skills necessary to cope with situations that seem overwhelming. • Essential life and leadership skills could help students find perspective and give them a framework for dealing with emotional trauma.
