  1. SIMPLE BoS Installer Network Balance of System (BoS) costs now account for upwards of 60% of the price of U.S. rooftop PV Systems. However, such costs are 75% lower in Germany, the international solar market leader. Georgia Tech and RMI are partnering to conduct a detailed time-and-motion study to explore specific components of this cost divide between the U.S. and Germany. Balance of System Cost Comparisons Between the U.S. and Germany $2.11 PII* Customer Acquisition Hardware** $0.56 Labor *Permitting, inspection, and interconnection costs **Does not include inverter cost Source: Seel et al. “Why are Residential PV Prices in Germany So Much Lower Than in the United States?” Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. 2. SIMPLE BoS Installer Network We are actively seeking solar installers of all sizes to join us in this effort to help lower balance of system costs in the U.S. Research Activities and Products Benefits of Participation • Activities • Time-and-motion studies with a focus on lean process principles • Industry interviews • Survey-based data collection • Deliverables • Detailed report with anonymizeddataset comparing German and US installation processes and costs • Free training materials and best practice resources for PV installation • Potential creation of a membership-driven industry organization for provision of ongoing best-in-class performance data • With your participation in the survey, the interview, and/or the time-and-motion studies, you will receive: • A confidential and customized company-level assessment of installation productivity compared against international best practices • An improved understanding of a methodology in assessing installation efficiency • An opportunity to inform future racking designs, guide development of the PV supply chain, and inform authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) rulemaking processes For more information and to participate, please visit GOOGLE SITE or contact us at simplebos@rmi.org
