  7. Ion Channels(a type of facilitated diffusion) • Transport proteins have polar channels for the important ions to pass • Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl- • Fig 3 • Used in maintaining electrical charge or nerve cells

Active Transport • Using energy to move particles across the cell membrane - through an transport protein (pump) • Usually against the concentration gradient - like going up a hill • Ex. glucose into liver and muscle cells for storage • from a low concentration in the bloodstream to a high concentration in the cells

  9. Sodium-Potassium Pumpfigure 5 • Found in nerve cells • Pumps 3 Na+ out of the cell and 2 K+ into the cell • Both against their concentration gradient
