  3. What is a fiber? • The tiny pieces that are woven or otherwise put together to create • yarn and fabrics.

  4. Natural Fibers • Wool • Cotton • Silk • Linen

  5. Wool Where does is come from? • Sheep • Goats • Rabbits • Llamas • Others

  6. Wool: • Comes from animals fur • Keeps you very warm • Shrinks when it is wet • Is course and rough on your skin

  7. Cotton Comes from a plant

  8. Cotton: • Grows on a plant • Is the most used natural fiber • Is very cool and comfortable • Grows in tropical /warm climates

  9. SilkWhere does silk come from?

  10. From cocoons made by silkworms!!

  11. Silk: • Is made from silk worms • Fades and is destroyed by the sun • Is a strong fiber when dry • Is expensive • Is soft and very comfortable

  14. Linen • Made from the flax plant • Used to be the main material used for making most bedding and towels • Is cool and light weight • Wrinkles a lot!

  15. Synthetic Fibers • Polyester • Nylon • Acetate • Acrylic

  16. Synthetic = Man made • Synthetic fibers are made from chemical solutions that are forced through a spinnerets. When the liquid leaves the spinneret, it hardens and forms long strands that are later used to make yarn and fabric.

  17. Polyester: • Is the most commonly used synthetic fiber • Can be made to imitate almost anything • Its hard to clean a stain from the fabric • Used to stuff pillows and comforters

  18. Nylon: • Is the second most used synthetic fiber • First used to make women’s nylon stockings • Is a strong and durable fiber • Is used for lot of different things like sleeping bags, tents, rope, fish nets and many different kinds of clothing

  19. Acetate: • Was made to imitate silk • Used for linings in clothing and for drapes, etc. • Will not ware out in the sun like silk will • Less expensive than silk

  20. Acrylic: • Was made to imitate wool • Is less expensive than wool • Won’t shrink like wool • Is used for sweaters and blankets

  21. Many, many, many more… • Olefin • Rayon • Spandex • Aramid • Microfiber
