  1. Science Strategies ACT You will need your English/Reading/Science pretest out.

  2. General information • 36 minutes- 40 questions • There can be 6-7 passages. It is actually better if there are 7. If there are six, that means one is particularly hard, so they reduced the number of passages. • Topics are random: chemistry, biology, earth science, physics • There are 5 question types: Charts and Graphs, Ups and Downs, Between the Lines or “Off the Charts”, The Paragraphs, and Think like a Scientist • There are three types of paragraphs: Data, Experiment, Fight Club • Read through the passage first without trying to fully understand the information. You are just getting the gist of the passage, tables, etc.

  3. Questions/Skills • Skill 31 Charts and Graphs: These questions direct you to a certain point on a graph. These are the most common on the test. • Stems – In Experiment 1, Based on the results of Experiment 2, According to figure 1, etc. • Italics signal a definition. • Underline the stem with the location. • Do 2, 3 and 4 on Skill 31

  4. Questions/Skill • Skill 32 Up and Down: These questions ask about the overall, patterns, or trends on charts or graphs. These are the second most common on the test. They will ask you to look for what happens to something as another thing changes. • Key words in answers : increases, decreases, doubles, halves etc. • Do 1-4 on Skill 32.

  5. Skill/Questions • Skill 33 Off the Charts, or Between the Lines: These type of questions still ask you to look at a table or graph, but they will ask you to determine a value for a point not shown. The answer is always above, below, or between the points shown. Exact math is not necessary. If you are looking at the table or graph properly, the answer will be obvious. • Key words are often “if” or “suppose”. • Do questions 1-4 on Skill 33.

  6. Skills/Questions • Skill 34 The Paragraph: This is exactly what it sounds like. The information needed to answer the question will be found in the paragraph. • Key: When you see a question that refers to a graph, but you don’t see the terms from the question, look at the paragraph. • 1. These questions may ask you about the paragraphs just like the Reading section. • 2. They might be just like the “graph” questions but use a term given in the paragraph in place of the one shown on the graph.

  7. Skill/Questions • Skill 35: Thinking Like a scientist. Maybe 3 on the test. • Key: Many of these ask about the control in an experiment. The control is the variable that is held constant throughout an experiment. • Example, if we were testing the effect of various saps to kill germs, we might conduct the experiment without any soap to have a baseline to compare the other results. This one experiment with no soap is the control. It gives us some idea (or control) over analyzing the effectiveness of the saps tested. • Use common sense.

  8. PassagesOrange book pg. 136 • There are three types of passages: Data Passages, Experiment or Study Passages and Fight club Passages • Data Passages: These have an experiment or a study with a chart or two tables or charts. • Experiment or Study Passages: These will say “Experiment or Study”. Pay close attention to where the questions direct you. • Fight Club: One on every test. It is divided into two parts. They will be identified by words OTHER THAN EXPERIEMENT OR STUDY. You may see: Scientist, student, hypothesis or a type of scientist. Save the Fight club for last. It is the hardest and requires the most close reading.

  9. Pg. 80 in the red book • Identify the passages • Question #$ is an “Evil Twin”: Key to answering these is underlining what is DIFFERENT. • Do official test starting on pg. 80
