CARIBU (Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade) status • Have delivered both stopped and reaccelerated beams using 400 mCi 252Cf source • More than 70 beams delivered to low-energy experimental area • Also a handful of reaccelerated beams delivered • Now starting program with 1.7 Ci source
CARIBU yield • Estimated yields can be found: http://www.phy.anl.gov/atlas/facility/caribu_beams_Nov13.html http://www.phy.anl.gov/atlas/facility/CaribuYields_Nov13.pdf • New estimated yields will be provided as we work with the 1.7 Ci source. 252Cf source properties: • 3% fission branch • 2.6 year halflife
CARIBU stopped beam area Isobar separator Resolving power ~ 20,000 (select specific fragment) Gas catcher (collect fission fragments) 1.7 Ci 252Cf source ‘Stopped’ beam experimental area ATLAS X-ARRAY BPT Buncher,Elevator CPT TAPE STATION • Delivery of beam • to ‘stopped’ area through low-energy beamline Switchyard
Low energy beamline – provides bunched beams Gas-filled RFQ “Elevator” 50 kV isolation Diagnostic station • Low energy beamline consists of gas-filled RFQ (buncher) to provide cooled, bunched beams to ‘stopped’ beam experimental area • Stopped beam area at ‘ground’ potential, therefore need ‘elevator’ to change 50 kV potential of ions (voltage on gas catcher deck)
Stopped beam area • Delivers 1.5 kV to 10 kV beam to experimental stations • Pulsed beams with rates from ~ 100 ms to seconds • Low emittance • Experimental stations: EXO (2012) CPT (installed) TAPE STATION (installed) X-ARRAY (available) BPT (2015) LASER SPECTROSCOPY: After CPT move (2015) • Limited amount of space … removal of Tandem will provide new experimental area (2015)
CARIBU with MR-TOF Isobar separator Resolving power ~ 20,000 (select specific fragment) Gas catcher (collect fission fragments) 1.7 Ci 252Cf source ‘Stopped’ beam experimental area ATLAS X-ARRAY BPT Buncher,Elevator MR-TOF CPT TAPE STATION • Delivery of beam • to ‘stopped’ area through low-energy beamline Switchyard
MR-TOF (multi-reflection time-of-flight) • ‘Fast’ isobar separator: • Resolving power ~ 40,000 • Transmission ~ 50% • Takes ~ ms • Needs initial isobar separator to limit space charge • To be installed Summer 2014
HELIOS GAMMASPHERE FMA Reaccelerated beams • CARIBU beams up to 12 MeV/u • 82.5 ns time structure of beam
