  1. US US Flag Day Flag Day June 14, 1777 is the day the Continental Congress adopted the American flag. The flag represents liberty, freedom and history among other things. There is meaning behind how the flag was designed. The original flag had 13 stripes that were red and white and 13 stars in a circle that represented the 13 original colonies. The colours had meaning also. Read more here: https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/june-14/ According to Martha Tompkins Ward, President George Washington, General Ross and other members of Congress went to the home of Betsey Ross and asked her if she would make the flag with the design they gave her. She agreed and had it made by the next day. She has been associated with making the flag ever since. Once a fourteenth colony was added to the Union, the stars had to be changed to the stripes

  2. we know today. Each time a state was added, a star was added. Since 1960 when Hawaii was added, we have had 50 stars. (1) She also states, “On the fourteenth of April, 1818, congress passed the following resolution: Resolved, That on the admission of a new state into the union one star be added to the union of the flag, and that such addition shall take effect on the fourth day of July, next succeeding such admission. This necessitated the change from the circle in the position of the stars, to parallel lines, which have come to number nearly half of a hundred instead of the original thirteen.” (1) https://www.online.drexel.edu/flag-history.aspx Woodrow Wilson first proposed that Flag Day would be June 14 of each year, but it wasn’t until 1949 that Congress approved it and President Harry Truman signed the bill making it official. President Harrison ordered the flag be flown over the White House. So this year on June 14th as you reflect on the history of the flag of the United States of America, lets fly it proudly and boldly thinking about what it means and represents. The hopes, dreams and sacrifices of the patriots and those who had vision of this great country are embedded in every thread of the flag of the United States of America. https://www.si.edu/spotlight/flag-day/flag-facts Tompkins Ward, Martha.
