  1. KEENobservational skills are essential forgraphic designers. Learn to see everything accurately. Become aware of what is not obvious. - MayamotoMusashi Your Assignment - Learn to see small details and render them accurately onthe computer. DRAW a common object with paper and pencil, scan it into the computer and trace it in Illustrator using the Pen Tool. Be sure to consider the effect of light and shadow in your drawings. Then scan it, open it in Illustrator and use Transparency and the Gradient Tool to create realistic shadows. Thanks and we’ll see your work soon! 2. ~ Shadows ~ The trick to making things look realistic! digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  3. ~ Shading ~ Makes things look more real. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  4. ~ Shadows & Shading ~ That’s what this project is all about. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  5. ~ Emphasize Shadows ~ Make them Obvious. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  6. ~ Fade the Shadows ~ Shadows get Lighter as the get Further Away digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  7. ~ Other Shadows ~ There are Lots of Ways to make Shadows in Illustrator digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  8. ~ Step #1 ~ Learn How to Make Shadows with a Pencil Crosshatching – • Layers of Lines at angles. Usually, the first layer is Vertical | The next horizontal – The next at 45° / digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  9. 4 Types of Crosshatching Create a rectangle the width of the page with 3 lines in the middle creating equal squares across it’s length. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  10. There are the 4 major directions that a line can follow: Vertical – Horizontal – Diagonal Left and Right digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  11. Use all four crosshatching line directions, removing subtracting one layer of crosshatching directional stroke to reveal whiter paper. Remember to pick up you pencil and begin a new line for every stroke, rather than scribbling the lines. Mow the Lawn! digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  12. ValueValue is the amount of lightness and darkness in a given area of color or shade. When there are less layers of lines in a given area, then more white paper is revealed and the area is said to be of a “lighter value”.This example creates the same illusion only by using many layers of smaller tighter curls on the left which open up into less layers of bigger looser curls on the right. The value is determined by the pressure of the pencil as well as the layers of curls. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  13. In these examples the layers of crosshatching lines are reduced from left to right creating the illusion of a dark value opening up into the light. The reduction of layers is subtle and the gradation is gradual. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx

  14. Cone Shape Crosshatching is one way artists produce the illusion of depth and shadow.

  15. Use Crosshatching to produce the illusion of roundness. Also use Crosshatching to add shadow.

  16. Cone Shape Using your new crosshatching skills, sketch a cone shape with emphasis on the shadows. digitalartanddesign.org/assets/crosshatching-worksheet.docx
