FACTS • 900 million population • 358 million Muslims, 410 m Christians • 19 democratic nations out of 53 • ½ live on less than $1 a day • Richest nation: Mauritius, poorest: Burundi, Sierra Leone, Somalia • Life expectancy: 46 in Sub Saharan Africa • Literacy rate: 60 percent, best: Seychelles: 92%, worst: Burkino Faso: 12% • over 2,000 languages
A few things to remember • Most of the people do subsistence farming to earn a living • two areas of Africa: north Africa and sub-Saharan Africa • most of the countries are developing: low life expectancy, high population growth rate, high infant mortality rate, low literacy rate, large population under the age of 15
CONTINUED Tropical climate found in most of African • In the many civil wars, diamonds are sold to finance the conflicts • Main religions in Africa: Animism, Islam, Christianity • Villagers in Africa buy products from Bazaars or from a Suq
Disease • Guinea worm- transmitted through water. Africans drink form dirty water that has a Parasite (flea) • The flea once inside the person it mates and reproduces. • Males die, females grow into 2ft long worms • When ready to release fertile eggs the worm starts eating its way out
Cont. • This causes an extreme burning sensation • Natural instinct is to put the burning area into water • Once in water the parasite is released • Only cure for this is to pull the worm out inch by inch over a period of weeks maybe months
