  1. Outlines Creating a strong structure

  2. Purpose: • Once an individual has a thesis statement, he can begin to structure an essay for it. • An outline is a great way to organize a essay

  3. Thesis Statement • Although smokers and cigarette companies do not like to believe it, smoking is a clear cause of cancer and, for this reason, it should be banned in all public places.

  4. Support the thesis with key points • Outlaw Smoking • Smoking is harmful • Smokers suffer coronaries and lung cancer • Nonsmokers suffer from passive smoking • Everyone will benefit from a smoking ban

  5. Look over the thesis • On a scratch sheet of paper create some key points to address in the research paper • However, list the ideas in bullet points using roman numerals. • Example: Outlaw Smoking • Smoking is harmful • Smokers suffer coronaries and lung cancer • Nonsmokers suffer from passive smoking • Everyone will benefit from a smoking ban

  6. Now take some of those main ideas and begin to develop them • So, for example, take the idea “Smoking is harmful” and begin to develop it Example: • I. Smoking is harmful A. Medical Evidence 1. Coronaries 2. Lung Cancer B. Smoker’s acknowledgement of danger 1. Men 2. Women

  7. Now take one of the ideas and develop it on a scratch sheet of paper. • Format it correctly. Every idea should be indented and have a bullet point (Examples: A. IV. 4. a. )

  8. Example • I. Smoking is harmful A. Medical Evidence 1. Coronaries 2. Lung Cancer B. Smoker’s acknowledgement of danger 1. Men 2. Women Note---Notice that every idea is supported by a larger idea. For each supplemental idea, indent it further to the right and assign it a different bullet. Remember, there must be at least two points for each idea.

  9. After completing the outline, it should resemble something like this. Thesis: Although smokers and cigarette companies do not like to believe it, smoking is a clear cause of cancer and, for this reason, it should be banned in all public places. Outline: I. Why smoke A. for pleasure and status B. Ignore danger II. Smoking is harmful A. Medical Evidence 1. Coronaries 2. Lung Cancer B. Smoker’s acknowledgement of danger 1. Men 2. Women III. Dangers to nonsmokers A. Passive smoking B. Carbon-monoxide poisoning IV. No escape for smokers and nonsmokers A. Need for nonsmoking areas B. Total ban most effective solution
