  2. Unit Objectives • Name the different ROSS application platforms. • Describe the difference between client hardware, client software and networking requirements. • Identify the components of the Business Resumption Plan. • Name five methods of troubleshooting.

  3. Unit Objectives • Identify two means of application support other than the helpdesk. • Describe how to submit a change request for ROSS. • Describe what part of ROSS is loaded on the user’s computer when the application is downloaded.

  4. User Platforms and Data • Production, Practice and Training. • Servers hosted at the USDA National Information Technology Center (NITC). • Data backed up periodically during day and stored in multiple areas.

  5. Client Hardware • Intel (or compatible) Processor I3 or better. • 4 GB of memory or better. • Network (802.11 g/n or NIC 10/100/1000). • 256 MB Video Card or better. • Hard Drive: 5 GB of Free Space for ROSS install and 100 MB of free space for Internet Explorer Caching.

  6. Client Software • Windows 7 - 32 bit. • Compatible with Windows XP. • Internet Explorer Version 8 or 9. (NAP will not work with earlier Versions.) • NAP - Adobe Flash Player (Version 11 or Greater).

  7. Network Connectivity(Firewalls and Ports) • Agency computer firewalls should already be configured for ROSS. • Firewalls protect networks from unwanted outside communications and limit access to computers outside a firewall.   • Ports are part of the rules defining a firewall. • A port number is part of the addressing information. • ROSSwill not communicate with your computer unless the designated ports are open. • ROSS port numbers depend on which platform you are trying to access.

  8. Business Resumption Plan • Needed when an unplanned event prevents the use of the application. • Hard drive failure. • Local network failures. • ROSS application server failure.

  9. Methods of Troubleshooting • Can you access the internet? • Can you access the application from a different computer? • Can you access the application from a different agency network? • Can another dispatch office connect to the application? • Can local Information Resource Management (IRM) personnel help?
