Wellness Policy • District policy aligned with state guidelines • One day a month has been designated for non-compliant food for school activities or class parties – not birthdays • Birthdays may use non-food items: goodie bags or a gift for the class such as a new book or educational game • If you choose to send food, must be compliant Cajon Park/Parent Resources

  4. All About Me • My background • Grew up in Santee • Attended UC Riverside then SDSU • A mom of two girls • My experience • Teaching since 2000. • Have worked as a literacy support teacher, EAK, a 1/2 combo • Cajon Park since 2003, 2nd grade

  5. My Goals • To prepare your child for third grade • To help your child become more independent, responsible, and organized • To teach your child how to solve problems by being a PeaceBuilder • To create an environment where kids feel comfortable and willing to take risks

  6. Expectations for Kids • Come on time ready to work • Bring AR book and Take Home Folder everyday! • Treat others with respect • Think about how their actions affect others

  7. Support your child’s learning by: • Getting your kids to school on time, schedule appointments for after school when you can • Helping your child learn responsibility • Assisting with homework and reading • Communicating with me if you have questions or concerns • Volunteer when you can (must renew paperwork with the office)

  8. Common Core Standards • Presentation afterwards at 6:30 • Language Arts and Math • All states will be the same with same assessment • Highlights: • Increase of collaboration among students • reading informational text (nonfiction) • less standards to teach allows more time to build real understanding and opportunity for critical thinking • new approach to math instruction as well as increased use of hands-on materials.

Reading • Balanced Literacy Approach • Emphasis on comprehension • Accelerated Reader • Word Count • Point Goals • Home Connect • Guided Reading Groups A student that reads independently for 21.1 minutes a day reads 1,201,000 more words per year than a student who only reads independently for 9.6 minutes a day. (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998)

  10. Writing • Printing • Spelling • Journals/Writing Centers • Portfolios • Personal Narrative, Informative/Explanatory, Opinion

  11. Math • EnVision • Increase use of hands-on with manipulatives • Spiral Review • Memorize Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20 (40 problems in 3 minutes)

  12. Will be taught together and with language arts Increased writing in these areas Incorporate collaborative group work and technology Science and Social Studies

  13. Music, Art, & Technology • Music is integrated into other curriculum areas. • Thematic art projects • Arts Attack • Computer Lab weekly and use of Netbooks in class

  14. Physical Education • Developing all gross motor skills as well as sportsmanship. • Monday and Wednesday are game day. • Tuesday and Thursday are Jog/Walk. • Wear appropriate shoes.

  15. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our class rules were created by the students themselves and posted right up front for all to see. • Emphasis on positive with rewards for individuals, tables, and whole class. • Card changes when a consequence is necessary.

  16. Homework • Packets come home Friday and are due back the next Friday. • Keep track of daily reading and fill out log. • Please go over your child’s work and have them correct any mistakes. • Initial each page when correct.

  18. Field Trips • We have fun field trips planned for this year! • History in a Trunk (coming here) • Mission Trails - possibly • Natural History Museum (coming here) • San Diego Zoo

  19. Special Activities • Apple Days • Halloween Rotations • Read Across America Day • Easter Egg Hunt • End of the year Park/Water Day
