  3. Community Warning System • CAER developed the CWS at no cost to the public • Now operated by Contra Costa County • Includes Safety Sirens, computer terminals linking all 9-1-1 Dispatch Centers with other agencies & some industry sites, weather radio alerts, media and paging links

  6. Shelter-In-PlaceHow will I know? The Outdoor Safety Sirens will sound! Information will be scrolled and announced via the news media. Weather radios in schools and other group facilities will sound an alert.

  13. Shelter-In-PlaceSHELTER • Go inside • Take pets with you • That’s what your fire department recommends!

  14. Shelter-In-PlaceSHUT • Close and lock doors and windows • Shut off heating or air conditioning • Cover vents • Close fireplace dampers

  15. Shelter-In-PlaceLISTEN • Turn on AM radio (tune to KCBS 740) or TV • CCTV will scroll instructions in English, Spanish and Tagalog • County phone ringdown system will start calling affected areas

  16. Shelter-In-PlaceExtra Precautions • Windows that do not seal, spaces under doors, etc. can be sealed with duct tape, plastic, or damp towels. • If you think chemicals are leaking in, have people cover their noses and mouths with damp washcloths, paper towels, or clothing items.

  17. Shelter-In-PlaceIt’s all about going inside! • If you are outside - immediately move everyone indoors to a store, shopping mall, etc. • The chemical will be moving with the wind, so move crosswind with the wind at your side.

  18. Shelter-In-PlaceIt’s all about staying inside! • You will tie up a needed line at the 911 dispatch center. And the county’s phone ringdown system won’t be able to reach you! • DO call if there is an injury or other immediate emergency to report. Don’t call 911

Shelter-In-PlaceHow Will I Know It Is Over? • Listen to KCBS - changes to the Shelter-In-Place advisory and the “all-clear” announcement will be broadcast • News media will receive messages • The scroll on CCTV will stop • County ringdown will re-call residents • For free email notification, go to www.incident.com

  20. Shelter-In-PlaceAfter the emergency... • Local authorities will determine when the event is “all clear.” • Open windows and doors and air out rooms with fresh air.
