Windows 8 Get ready for the biggest change to IT since the Palm Pilot!!
Welcome to the EPA • 180 staff, one network, two locations • Microsoft stack, Server 2012, SQL 2008R2, Dynamics CRM 2011, SharePoint 2010*, Exchange 2010*, IE 9, 10 and 11, Office 2010*, MS Lync 2013? • All PC’s and laptops are Windows 7 • All 15 trial tablets are Windows 8.1 • Intend that when hardware replacement happens next fn year all will be tablets
Actually it’s not about Windows 8 • Its about the hardware. • Users want mobility • Integrating android and apple tablets adds cost • Gartner said none of the big four are making money selling PC’s. • What’s missing from this picture?
The stuff that comes with Windows 8 • Direct access • Same interface as the phones • Possibly no retesting, but it is IE11? • Microsoft’s application store • Optimised for Hyper-V • The cloud is nearer than you think
Getting ready for Windows 8 • You should have just installed tools/services to deploy Windows 7 – reuse these • Don’t use docking stations – use USB3 connectors to port replicators • Keep your big screens and keyboards etc. • Get your wireless in. Is it robust enough? • Get your software up to date – 2013 or better • Listen to you providers • Listen to your users • However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.
