Outline • How graduate students benefit from these scholarships/fellowships opportunities? • Depending on the type: • Full support for your graduate studies (tuition, fees, stipend…) • Awarded grants for your research • Gain travel funding to go to conferences • Ability to pursue a study abroad opportunity • Where to look for these opportunities? • Start from KU website • Find out what scholarships people in your department have received • What sorts of opportunities are out there? • Federal scholarships e.g. Department of Energy (DoE), Department of Defense (DoD), etc • State funding (e.g. KDoT, James B. Pearson Fellowship) • University or departmental funding (e.g. Madison and Lila doctorate fellowship) • Private/Corporate funding (e.g. Hertz Foundation) • Hearing from Fellow graduate students who earned some of these scholarships: • Evan Austin (SMART), Dave Minnick (SELF), Nikki Johnson (NSF, SELF), • Himanshu Dande (GS Summer Research), Tiffany Suekama (GK-12, NSF)

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship • Almost all engineering majors are eligible for SMART scholarship: •  Information Sciences Chemical Engineering Civil Engineering Biosciences •  Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering •  Computer Sciences Material Science and Engineering Physics Mathematics • All awardees must be: • a U.S. citizen at time of application, willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Benefits: • Full tuition and education related fees • Stipend paid at a rate of $25,000 - $38,000 • Paid summer internships • Health Insurance allowance up to $1,200 per calendar year • Book allowance of $1,000 per academic year • Mentoring • Employment placement after graduation The application will close December 14, 2012. http://smart.asee.org/

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) • Who can apply? • US citizens, US nationals, or permanent residents • A research-focused Master's or Ph.D. student in an NSF-supported field • Completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2012 • Must meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation Benefits: Stipend is currently $30,000 for a 12-month tenure period, prorated in whole month increments of $2,500. Schools’ tuition and fees are covered 100%

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) • How to apply (required documents) • The Personal Statement • Previous Research Experience • Proposed Plan of Research (maximum length of two pages) • Official or Unofficial Academic Transcripts • Three Reference Letters Deadline:   November 13, 2012 NSF also offers STUDY ABROAD opportunities to enroll in non-US institutions that are affiliated with US-institutions. Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship “To identify, recruit, and provide development opportunities for exceptional Ph.D. students in: business, economics, engineering, mathematics, biological, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and physical sciences” New Self Fellows for 2013–2014 will receive $29,500 each year for four years and includes a GRA position within your research area. Final Word… • Look for a scholarship that matches your track of study and status, there are numerous opportunities out there • Go to your department’s office and ask them about scholarships you can apply for • Try to get a hold of fellow graduate students who have been awarded before and ask them how to apply.
