  1. Any chemical, physical, radiological, or biological substance in a drinking water is definde as "contaminant" (Environmental Protection Agency). Drinking water always has some amount of contaminants, they does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk, but they may be harmful if consumed at certain levels. Here are some categories examples of each: - Physical appearance of water depends on physical contaminants: organic or sediment material in the water of rivers, wells, and lakes from soil erosion. - Chemical contaminants are often man-made, but sometimes are naturally occurring: salts, metals, toxins, and so on. - Organisms in water are biological contaminants: viruses, bacteria, parasites, and protozoan. - Radiological contaminants are represented by elements that can emit ionizing radiation: cesium, plutonium and uranium. Process of removing contaminants is called "water purification". The goal is to produce water for human consumption, pharmacological, chemical, medical, and other applications. Purification methods include sedimentation, filtration, distillation, chemical processes, electromagnetic radiation, and ultraviolet light. Reverse osmosis water filtration systems help to remove or reduce chlorines, heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide and so on. Although water filters are not always an end-solution in the removal of bacteria, most of them inhibit further development of bacteria, algae and fungiviruses. Usually, drinking water supply does not include dangerous amount of microorganisms, but you can use sub- micron post-filters and ultravilolen units to reduce or eliminate bacteria and viruses. Colorless, clear, and odorless water may not have the right quality. Filtering or (and) boiling water from an unknown source not always remove all the possible contaminants. You need to test even natural spring water to drink it safely. Water purification systems perform reducing or elimination bacterial and virus contamination. However, they do not purify water from sediment, chemical contaminants, etc. Purification systems are often used after filtration – water filters remove unwanted chemical components whereas purification effectively removes bacteria and viruses.
